Cinemax comes to cord-cutters via Sling TV for $10 per month

HBO arrived on Sling TV in April of last year, making the service a much more attractive option for potential cord-cutters. Now another premium movie channel has come to the service — making it feel just a bit more like cable.

On Thursday, Sling TV announced that Cinemax has joined HBO in its lineup of a la carte movie options. It’s the first time Cinemax has been available outside of a traditional cable subscription.

“Sling TV is the first live standalone Internet TV service to deliver Cinemax to an audience of cord-cutters and cord-nevers,” Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch said in a statement. “This announcement comes only days after we celebrated Sling TV’s one-year anniversary. Over the past year, we’ve established a history of industry firsts, and the addition of Cinemax is evidence of our intent to uphold this swift innovative pace.”

Cinemax is available for Sling TV customers for $10 per month, the same price it would go for as an add-on channel to a cable subscription. However, as with cable, you’ll need to subscribe to Sling TV’s “Best of Live TV” package first, bringing the total cost to $30. Throw in HBO for $15 and your total bill is $45, which is still a good deal cheaper than it would likely be through a cable or satellite provider.

As with many other Sling TV channels, Cinemax includes the standard live — or “linear,” as that seems to be the favorite wording from TV networks these days — channel, as well as on-demand programming. Sling TV says this is the same catalog users would find in a MAX Go subscription from cable providers.

In addition to movies, the channel offers a number of popular original series including Strike Back, Hunted, The Knick, and Banshee, which kicks off its fourth and final season on April 1. Cinemax is premiering two new shows, Quarry and Outcast later this year.

The addition of Cinemax bolsters the service’s movie lineup, which in addition to HBO, features Epix, Sundance, and Turner Classic Movies bundled together in its “Hollywood Extra” package for $5 per month.

Sling TV finishes 2021 with a slight amount of growth
Sling TV.

Sling TV closed out 2021 with 2.486 million subscribers, parent company Dish reported today. That's down about 70,000 subscribers for the quarter, but up about 12,000 year over year, and up about 175,000 subs from two years ago.

In other words, another year of mostly the same for Sling, which hasn't seen growth of more than 20,300 subscribers in the past eight quarters.

Vizio finally gets Sling TV on SmartCast
Sling TV.

The No. 3 live TV streaming service in the United States is finally available on one of the biggest smart TV platforms. Vizio today announced that its SmartCast operating system finally has a Sling TV app, meaning you'll no longer need to resort to other methods (or other products) to watch Sling on your Vizio TV.

Sling TV last reported 2.556 million paid subscribers as of the third quarter of 2021. That definitely keeps it behind Hulu With Live TV, which sported some 4 million paid subscribers, and likely behind YouTube TV as well, which last gave word of "more than 3 million" subs, but that was back in October 2020. It hasn't given an update since.
