Coby Recalls Thousands of Portable Radios

Coby Recalls Thousands of Portable Radios

Coby Electronics and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission yesterday announced a product recall on about 13,800 Coby branded USB/MP3/CD boomboxes. These boomboxes are being recalled because of the potential they can overheat, causing a fire hazard.

This hazard can be caused when the players are left plugged into an electrical outlet and the off switch is not firmly in place. The recalled Coby boombox is a portable CD/MP3 player with an AM/FM radio. The USB feature allows it to be connected to a computer. The boombox is primarily white with silver-colored speakers. The word “COBY” is written on the front and “DIGITAL” is written on the top. The model number, “MP-CD475” also is written on the top. The recalled units, all made in China and sold at discount, toy and office supply stores nationwide from August 2006 through December 2006 for between $20 and $50, have serial numbers located on the rear of the unit beneath the AC power cord plug-in outlet.

These serial numbers are in the following range limits:0736000001 through 0736005000, 0816000001 through 0816005300 and 0826000001 through 0826003500. Consumers whose Coby boomboxes fall into this recall should unplug these boomboxes immediately and contact Coby for information on returning the recalled units and receiving a refund. Coby can be reached at (800) 524-9219 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

LG 86-inch TVs recalled because they can tip and fall, possibly causing injury or death
A recalled 86-inch LG TV.

LG has been forced to recall four models of 86-inch TVs because the included support legs (aka "stands") have become unstable in a number of incidents, leading to tip-overs. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in any of the 12 reported cases, however, these TVs weigh around 100 pounds -- enough to create "entrapment hazards that can result in injuries or death to children and others," according to a recall alert from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

CES 2023: Hisense’s smallest laser projector is portable and has a huge 150-inch image size
Hisense Smart Mini Laser Cinema.

Hisense has been working on laser projectors (or laser TVs as they're sometimes called) for several years, but CES 2023 is the first time the company has shown a portable version of the high-brightness projector tech. It debuted the Hisense Smart Mini Projector at the show, alongside four other laser TV models. No prices or release dates were immediately available. The company also launched its 2023 TV lineup and debuted a new, ultrabright flagship TV called the UX.

For 2023, Hisense has decided to split its laser TV products into two categories: Laser TV and Laser Cinema. The difference is that the Laser TV models are ultra-short throw (UST) projectors that come with their own ambient-light rejecting (ALR) screens and are designed to project images at non-adjustable sizes, just like a regular TV. Laser Cinema models, on the other hand, are (with the exception of the Mini) also UST, but they have an adjustable image size and they don't come with a screen.
