Comedy Central’s Key and Peele, Daily Show, and more land on the Roku

Roku users have a new reason to smile — and to laugh. Comedy Central has been added to the channel store, making it now possible for the Roku faithful to stream the network’s shows. According to Variety, some content will require users to have a TV subscription, but other content will be available for free.

Among Comedy Central’s free offerings are full episodes of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Key & Peele, and South Park. This is especially good news for Daily Show fans hoping to soak in as much Jon Stewart as possible before he departs the show on Aug. 6. Although Comedy Central has already set up a dedicated website for those who want to stream every episode of the show, as well as added them to the Comedy Central app, the Roku channel provides yet another option.

Comedy Central has been making streaming easier overall as of late, having already launched app support for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Xbox One. By teaming up with Roku, it’s joining a number of TV networks that are also hosting their content on the device. Roku users can now simply add Comedy Central from the channel store, which currently includes Netflix, HBO GO, Showtime Anytime, PBS, and more.

The Comedy Central channel page assures us that “there are hours and hours of funny stuff to watch — just sign in with your TV provider to access everything.” Past episodes of stand-up specials and classic shows are included, and full episodes will be added the day after air.

CNN+ lands on Roku today

A week after it soft-launched in web browsers and six days after it was officially available to nearly everyone else, CNN+ is now coming to the largest streaming platform in the United States — Roku.

It'll require an update to the existing CNN Go app, which will be home to both live CNN content (which still requires some sort of live TV subscription), as well as all the new CNN+ content, which includes up to a dozen live daily shows, a handful of new original series, and more than 1,000 hours of programming. If the CNN Go app doesn't update on its own, you can force Roku to check by going to the System Update section of the Settings menu.

Roku OS 11 allows your photos to be screensavers

Roku today announced that Roku OS 11 will be headed to devices in the coming weeks, with the semiannual update cycle bringing new features and modes — and a pretty big improvement to screensavers.

Roku Photo Streams will allow you to use your own photos (or someone else's photos, presumably) to replace the somewhat cartoonish themes the Roku screensavers have had over the years. It's not that they were bad, but they definitely lacked the sophistication and photorealism that Apple, Google and Amazon have brought to the game, which very much turned your idle TV into a digital art piece.

Roku is aware of its OS 10.5 update breaking your streaming apps

If you're struggling to stream video after the Roku OS 10.5 update, you're not alone, apparently. The leading streaming platform's user forums have been busy in the days following the major update, with all sorts of complaints of things being broken.

The complaints range from channel-specific — things like YouTube TV not working — to overall network connectivity problems to general malaise. It's not easy to troubleshoot from afar when you're dealing with multiple devices over multiple generations, but the general consensus over 20 pages of posts so far (as well as in the Roku subreddit) is that something is wrong.
