These Icelandic women just upstaged the Powerbeats Pro in nearly every way

It’s been two years since Beats released its popular Powerbeats Pro workout earbuds and, so far, there’s no sign of a new version. But if a pair of Icelandic CrossFit world champs have anything to say about it, you can stop waiting right now. That’s because their new audio company, Dóttir Audio, has just released its first product, the $150 Dóttir Freedom On-Grid, a set of Powerbeats Pro alternatives that look a lot like Beats’ buds, but go way beyond what those earbuds can do.

Dóttir, a common Icelandic surname suffix that means “daughter,” is the brainchild of Katrin Davidsdottir and Annie Thorisdottir, who met and became best friends through their mutual love of CrossFit. Both of them have won the top honors at the CrossFit Games twice, with Thorisdottir being the first woman to do so. The pair decided to launch Dóttir as a brand that develops headphones for athletes, but also supports female empowerment and equality.

The Freedom On-Grid have definitely brought the women’s competitive spirit to the true wireless earbuds market. They use the same basic earhook and physical buttons design as the Powerbeats Pro, but then go further by adding active noise cancellation (ANC) and wireless charging (two features the Beats buds don’t have). They also boast IPX7 water resistance (Powerbeats Pro are rated IPX4).

The Powerbeats Pro have long been a battery life leader, but the Freedom On-Grid upstage the Beats buds here, too, with 12 hours of playing time on a single charge and a total of 72 hours when you include their charging case. By comparison, the Powerbeats Pro get nine and 24 hours respectively.

Sound quality had always been another reason to pick the Powerbeats Pro. It’s too early to say if the Freedom On-Grid sound better, but Dóttir has included Qualcomm’s aptX and aptX HD Bluetooth codecs, which should help them sound their best when connected to compatible smartphones.

The Freedom On-Grid don’t offer hands-free access to Siri, but you can still speak to your phone’s voice assistant via one of the physical controls. You can pre-order them today in either white or black from www.dottiraudio.com.

Creative’s Outlier Pro ANC earbuds have massive battery life
Man wearing Creative Outlier Pro ANC earbuds.

If you need a set of wireless earbuds that can last through an entire workday (and then some) without needing to be recharged, Creative's new $90 Outlier Pro might just fit the bill. With active noise cancellation (ANC), good water resistance, and the ability to run for up to 15 hours before you pop them back in their charging case, they've got more stamina than almost any other earbuds you can buy. They're available starting April 4, 2022, from the Creative online store.

At $90, the Outlier Pro are indeed outliers when it comes to battery life. Creative claims you'll get 10 hours per charge when using ANC, and up to 15 hours when you turn that feature off. When you include the capacity of their charging case, those numbers jump to 40 and 60 hours, respectively. To put that in context, to get a set of wireless earbuds with comparable stamina, you're looking at spending considerably more, with the $149 Audio-Technica ATH-CKS50TW (20 hours ANC off/50 hours total), or the $150 JVC HA-XC90T (15 hours/45 total). Plus, the Outlier Pro offer wireless charging, which is something neither Audio-Technica nor JVC include.

1More’s PistonBuds Pro deliver hybrid ANC for $70
1more pistonbuds pro noise canceling wireless earbuds 1

Manufacturer 1More has a new set of wireless earbuds that further reduce the cost of active noise cancellation (ANC). The $70 PistonBuds Pro, which come in white and black color options, are available right now on Amazon.com.

Like the original $50 PistonBuds, the PistonBuds Pro are very small. They're not quite as small as the recently released 1More ComfoBuds Mini, which are the smallest ANC earbuds you can buy, but the PistonBuds Pro are almost identical in size to the tiny $150 Beats Studio Buds. The PistonBuds Pro have moved away from the stem-based design of the PistonBuds, which should help those with larger ears get a secure fit, as the PistonBuds' stems tended to stop the earbuds from being more deeply inserted.

1More’s $99 ComfoBuds Mini may be the smallest ANC earbuds
Hands seen holding 1More ComfoBuds Mini wireless earbuds.

With the $99 ComfoBuds Mini, 1More has added another product to its ComfoBuds line of wireless earbuds that also includes that ComfoBuds and ComfoBuds Pro. This time, the company is claiming a world's first -- the ComfoBuds Mini are apparently the smallest earbuds you can buy that feature active noise cancellation (ANC). They're available starting March 15 in black and sand colors at 1More's website and various retailers.

When you look at photos of the tiny earbuds nestled in their egg-like oval charging case they're reminiscent of Google Pixel Buds and Pixel Buds A-Series, but the ComfoBuds Mini are considerably smaller and lighter at just 3.7 grams each (the Pixel Buds each weigh 5 grams). Plenty of folks would like to use wireless earbuds, but if you have really small ears, you've probably encountered difficulties getting a comfy and secure fit. These new ComfoBuds might be the answer.
