EchoStar to Buy Sling Media for $380 Mln

Satellite TV operator EchoStar has entered into a deal to aquire digital video place-shifting developer Sling Media for about $380 million in cash and EchoStar options.

Sling Media develops and distributes the SlingBox and SlingPlayer software, which enables users to watch their home television, recorded programming, and even their home video collection from anywhere in the world using a broadband Internet connection. A recent product has been Clip+Sling, which enables users to socialize around television content by sending each other short clips of video programming along with comments.

EchoStar was an early investor in Sling Media.

“We are psyched to make this announcement,” said Sling Media co-founder, chair, and CEO Blake Krikorian, in a statement. “We have worked closely with EchoStar for more than two years, and have come to realize that both companies have similar entrepreneurial cultures and mutual dedication and passion for creating empowering experiences that benefit the consumer and the media industry.”

Through the acquisition, EchoStar is expected not only to continue to develop Sling Media’s video place-shifting business, but also to integrate Sling Media technologies into its DISH Network products, potentially developin an integrated service offer that enables customers to tap into their home satellite feed and recorded programming via the Internet from anywhere in the world.

The deal is expected to close by the end of 2007.

Sling TV — the third-largest streaming provider of live TV in the U.S. — today announced across-the-board price increases. Starting after December 3, 2022, the base Sling TV service will cost $40, up $5 from the previous price. That's for a single subscription to either the Sling Orange plan, or the Sling Blue plan. If you want both, it'll now cost $55 — another $5 increase.

And that means you might well be on the lookout for a Sling TV alternative.

How to buy LG’s Star Wars ultra-limited-edition C2 OLED TV (and how much it costs)
The Star Wars evo C2 OLED TV is sitting in front of a stylized foggy backdrop with Darth Vader and Star Wars branding on the screen.

In late May, LG announced that it would release an ultra-limited Star Wars edition of its impressive 65-inch C2 OLED TV. At the time, all we knew were a few design elements and that only 501 units were being sold (a nod to Darth Vader's leadership of the Empire's 501st clone army division).

Today, LG is announcing that the C2 OLED evo 65-inch Star Wars edition will be available exclusively on LG’s site for a Force-defying price of $3,000. While our review of the C2 puts it near the top of our list for OLED TVs, the Star Wars edition will run you nearly a full $500 more than the standard 65-inch C2, so you’ll have to be a pretty die-hard Star Wars fan to justify the upcharge.
