Fire TV adds tablet games, Android mirroring to its bag of tricks

Amazon fireTV kit
Amazon’s Fire TV streaming device scored another victory in the race for set-top box dominance today, announcing an update that allows users who optioned to buy its compatible gaming controller the ability to play “tablet style games.” In addition, the Fire TV added guest display mirroring, allowing any user with a compatible Miracast-enabled mobile device to send content to the big screen viathe box.

Users who want to take advantage of the Fire TV’s expanding crop of games will need to allow their set-top box to update its software, if auto-update hasn’t taken care of the download already. Users can prompt a manual software update by clicking ‘Settings’ from the Home screen, then selecting ‘System.’ In the System window, click on the ‘About’ tab, and select ‘Check for System Update’, which will auto-prompt the download.

After the download is complete, new games will become available in the Play Games & Apps window. From there, simply troll the new list of games, download, and start playing. If you haven’t already bought the separate game controller for your Fire TV, this might be a great time to pony up $40 to get one, or you can use a Nyko PlayPad Pro or an Xbox 360 wired controller. We reached out to Amazon for more specifics, and the company said it currently has 44 tablet games “optimized for Fire TV.”

Guest display mirroring is another handy new feature for Amazon’s fledgeling device, allowing any user with a compatible device to display their mobile screen and accompanying audio on the big screen via the Fire TV. Previously, the mobile device to be mirrored also had to be registered to the same Amazon account as the Fire TV. Compatible devices include Android devices running 4.2 Jelly Bean or higher, the Fire HDX tablet and, if you happen to own one, the Fire Phone.

In addition to those new talents, Amazon also now allows U.S. and U.K. Fire TV users to bring the Fire TV across the pond for extended travel. The device was previously relegated to its country of origin.

The Fire TV game controller is available at Amazon.

Update 11/4/2014: This post has been updated to add new information after reaching out to Amazon for specifics.

Amazon Fire TV Channels brings even more free TV to the platform
Amazon Fire TV Channels.

Amazon today announced Fire TV Channels, which brings even more free ad-supported TV — otherwise known as FAST — to the Amazon Fire TV operating system.

The gist is simple: You'll see even more free video promoted to you on the Amazon Fire TV home screen from the various sources within the FAST universe. That means in addition to all the content currently available on Amazon Freevee (formerly known as IMDB TV), there will be video from the NHL, Xbox, and TMZ. There will be a new travel category, too, and Conde Nast and the PGA are teed up next.

The Fire TV Stick 4K connected to a TV.

Even the best TVs aren’t complete without a way to access streaming services, and one of the most affordable ways to get that access is with an Amazon Fire TV Stick. You can currently grab one for just $9 at Woot!, and it even comes with a first generation Alexa Voice Remote. These are renewed devices that have been tested and verified by Amazon, which owns Woot!, though they may have some cosmetic damage. Even so, $9 is a steal for this streaming media player. Free shipping is included for Amazon Prime members.

Why you should buy the Amazon Fire TV Stick
The Amazon Fire TV Stick is a simple way to watch streaming services on your TV. There are more technologically advanced models out there, such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, but at its heart the Fire TV Stick lineup is made to make streaming service access easy. The Fire TV Stick plugs directly into your TV, and isn’t much larger than a traditional USB thumb drive. This will give you instant access to Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, YouTube, Amazon Video, and more. There are over 500,000 TV episodes and movies ready to stream, and you can even watch live TV, including sports and news.

Google TV adds even more free TV to its live guide
Google TV live guide.

For all the attention the Streaming Wars get — and most of that is misguided — free TV is still huge in a world of Netflix and Disney+. And so it's of little surprise to see Google TV today announcing the addition of Tubi, Plex, and Haystack News to its Live tab, giving what it says are more than 800 channels of free TV, all in one place.

They join Pluto TV, which already was integrated, as well as news channels from NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox.
