Focal’s Listen headphones go wireless, joined by affordable new in-ears

Focal’s latest earbuds, the Focal Sphear Wireless, are now available — read our review.

Focal has unveiled a trio of new headphones ready for release, including the affordable new in-ear Spark and Spark wireless headphones, as well as a new wireless version of the company’s impressive Listen headphones. Whether you’re looking for economical listening on the go or something a bit more, each of the three models has something to offer.

Spark and Spark Wireless

Focal has positioned these two pairs as the follow up to its Sphear in-ears that originally launched in 2015. Both the Spark and Spark Wireless feature robust aluminum housings, featuring 9.5mm drivers with a claimed 20Hz to 20kHz frequency response.

Both sets also offer three-button mic pieces for fielding phone calls, as well as a hard carrying case, and three sizes of silicon eartips. The loop-styled Spark Wireless feature Bluetooth 4.1 for wireless connection, a somewhat middling 8-hour battery runtime, and of course, a USB to USB Micro charging cable.

Priced at $69, the wired Spark comes in black and silver, with a cobalt model slated for mid-to-late July, while the Spark Wireless will run you $99. Available now in black and white, the wireless model will also get a rose gold tint in mid-to-late July as well. Both models are available at Focal’s website.

Listen Wireless

As the name indicates, the Listen Wireless is the wireless version of Focal’s previously released Listen headphones. This Listen Wireless are powered by 40mm drivers within each memory foam-padded earcup, with a frequency response of 15Hz to 22kHz and 32 Ohm impedance. The cans boast Bluetooth 4.1, with a claimed 60-foot listening radius, aptX for high quality wireless streaming, and touch pairing via NFC on supported devices.

The headphones will remember up to 8 devices at a time and can also connect to two devices simultaneously, allowing you to easily switch between devices. Focal also claims the Listen Wireless boast an impressive 20-hour battery runtime. Other features include an on-board microphone and a three-button control system on the earcup.

Available in mid July for $300, the Listen Wireless will ship with a soft carry case, a USB to USB Micro for charging, plus an analog cable for wired 3.5mm connection. You can check out all of Focal’s latest headphones online now.

Audio-Technica’s $2,700 wooden wireless headphones do something no other headphones can do
Audio-Technica ATH-WB2022 wireless headphones.

Audio-Technica (A-T) has been doing some wild things in honor of its 60th anniversary, like creating a $9,000 phono cartridge, and bringing back its quirky Sound Burger portable record player from the 80s. But those are just fun frivolities. The really impressive birthday gift that this 60-year-old is sharing with the world is the ATH-WB2022, a set of wooden, wireless headphones that claim to be the very first to have built-in balanced stereo.

I know, you may be scratching your head, wondering how this feature can possibly justify an insane $2,700 price tag, but audiophiles are going to be salivating right about now.

KEF takes a swing at Bose, Sony, and Sennheiser with its first wireless ANC headphones
KEF Mu7 wireless noise-canceling headphones.

KEF, the British audio brand best known for its high-end speakers, has launched the Mu7, its first set of premium, wireless noise-canceling headphones. They're priced at $400 and come in two slightly different color tones: silver gray, and charcoal gray. For the moment, they're only available at KEF's website.

The Mu7 are very distinctive, with a design created by Ross Lovegrove, who collaborated with KEF on its first set of wireless earbuds, the Mu3. In fact, the Mu7 look like a scaled-up version of the Mu3, with a similar smooth-oval shape for the earcups and plenty of aluminum used throughout the headphones. The design mirrors other high-end wireless headphones with a fold-flat set of hinges, but KEF only includes a carry "pouch" instead of the nearly standard zippered carry case.

Focal’s first wireless headphones promise ANC and hi-fi sound for $799
Focal Bathys wireless headphones.

Well-heeled audiophiles now have a new choice when it comes to wireless headphones. Focal, the French audio icon known for its superb but pricey wired headphones, has released its first-ever Bluetooth, noise-canceling headphones, the $799 Focal Bathys. The black and silver cans are available starting October 4 at a limited selection of retailers.

The Bathys take their name from the word bathyscaphe, a specialized submarine capable of extremely deep dives, which, Focal says, is the embodiment of absolute silence and calm. Focal fans will find plenty of familiar touches, like the Bathys' deeply padded, leather-wrapped ear cushions and headband, a set of perforated earcup grilles that use Focal's distinct multi-circle pattern, and high-quality materials like aluminum and magnesium.
