'New and improved’ Spotify experience coming to 2015-2016 Samsung Smart TVs

For many of us, Spotify is an app that is only ever used on our mobile devices and computers, but the music streaming service is available on many more platforms, including smart TVs. On Thursday, the company announced that a new and improved version of its app is on the way for recent Samsung Smart TV models.

Specifically, Samsung models from 2015 and 2016 are getting the update. Both Spotify Free and Premium members can use the app to play, skip, browse, and search songs, via a new user interface that has been optimized for use on larger screens. The update also makes it easier to use Spotify Connect to control the app using your phone, tablet, or computer.

This updated functionality may not be of much use for those who only use Spotify to listen to the occasional song, but it makes much more sense when you consider the company’s recent move toward incorporating video into its streaming experience. To that end, the company introduced a new original series called Flash Frame on Thursday.

“Each episode of Flash Frame centers around the celebration of a musician’s career by highlighting milestones, taking a trip down memory lane and giving the artist’s Spotify-identified superfans unprecedented access to participate in an upcoming music video,” the company wrote in a blog post. “Performance footage of a song from that show is then combined with original content commissioned by Spotify from world-class video producers, artists and animators to create a unique new music video, starring not only the artists but their biggest fans as well.”

For the first episode of the show, Blink-182 has been chosen as the focus. In the most recently released chapter, the band pays homage to its own video for What’s My Age Again? years later in its newest music video for the song She’s Out of Her Mind.

This updated Spotify experience for Samsung Smart TVs is available in every market in which Spotify is available, except for Japan. Unfortunately for users of 2014 and earlier Samsung Smart TVs, you’ll be stuck with an older version of the app, and comparatively limited functionality.

For more information on how to listen to Spotify throughout your entire home, see the company’s website.

Vizio has new smart TVs and soundbars for 2023, but the best may be yet to come
Vizio 2023 M-series TV hanging on a wall.

Vizio has announced its 2023 collection of new M-, V-, and D-Series smart TVs and M-Series soundbars, all with trickle-down features from the company's flagship products -- but totally absent were any new P-Series products.

Judging from what the company provided, it's continuing its aggressive pricing strategy while adding some small but valuable improvements, like better Wi-Fi, Bluetooth integration, and expanded variable refresh rate (VRR) support. That's great to see, and anyone considering a TV or soundbar purchase in the next few months now has more options, but it left us wondering, when will Vizio share its enhancements for its top-of-the-line P-Series Quantum and Quantum X TVs?

You can finally watch TikTok videos on Vizio smart TVs. Here’s how to do it
TikTok TV app seen on a Vizio TV.

Vizio might be one of the biggest sellers of smart TVs in the U.S., but it's not always the fastest to add new features, as Vizio owners who are also TikTok users know all too well. When TikTok announced its first smart TV app, TikTok TV, in November 2021, it included compatibility with Samsung's Tizen smart OS, Google TV (and other Android TV flavors), and 2018 and newer LG WebOS-powered TVs. Even Amazon's Fire TV platform got in on the TikTok TV action, but Vizio TVs were nowhere to be found. As of June 23, that omission has finally been rectified with the addition of the TikTok TV app on Vizio TVs.

In an emailed press release, Vizio notes that the integration will let its users discover videos from their favorite TikTok creators and topics directly from their TV's home screen, with no additional downloads required.

Xbox Game Pass is coming to Samsung smart TVs. The service will get its own app on all upcoming Samsung TVs, allowing owners to stream Game Pass’ cloud library without a console. Digital Trends went hands-on with the app at a press event this week.

Back at CES 2022, Samsung announced that it would break into video games with its Samsung Gaming Hub. The feature, which is set to launch with Samsung TVs this summer, includes cloud services like Google Stadia and GeForce Now. In partnering with Microsoft, Xbox Game Pass will join the hub at launch as well. Players will just need a Game Pass Ultimate subscription to access it.
