The Last of the Mohicans series heads to HBO Max with Watchmen director attached

Paramount Television’s The Last of the Mohicans series reboot, based on James Fenimore Cooper’s classic historic novel, has landed at HBO Max.

WarnerMedia’s forthcoming streaming service — set to launch in May — has handed out a script order for the TV series. The series will be written by Emmy winner Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective) and Nick Osborne (All About Steve) and has Nicole Kassell of Watchmen fame on board to direct.

The new take of the classic French and Indian War novel is described as a retelling that focuses on the unlikely romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel.

The project was first put into development in April by Paramount Television, for which Fukunaga has also executive produced the Netflix limited series Maniac and TNT’s The Alienist. Fukunaga, Osborne, and Kassell will executive produce alongside Alex Goldstone (Welcome to the Jungle), Bard Dorros (Collateral Beauty), and Michael Sugar (Spotlight, Maniac).

Kassell garnered critical praise for her work on Damon Lindelof’s HBO drama Watchmen after working with the showrunner on The Leftovers, also for HBO. She has also directed episodes of Claws, Westworld, Better Call Saul, Rectify, Castle Rock and American Crime.

The Last of the Mohicans is no stranger to screen adaptation. The HBO Max project is just the latest in a long run of TV and film adaptations. The 1920 feature is considered a “culturally significant” take by the Library of Congress and is included on the U.S. National Film Registry. The novel was also made into a 1971 BBC series and a 1992 feature film starring Daniel Day-Lewis. FX also previously developed the novel but did not move forward with the project.

HBO Max is set to launch in May with a roster of classic programming from WarnerMedia’s portfolio (including Friends and The Big Bang Theory) and scripted originals that continues to get more intriguing. The Last of the Mohicans joins Grease: Rydell High, the Cristin Milioti-led comedy Made for Love, and the limited series Station Eleven, starring Mackenzie Davis are all in the original content pipeline. The service will cost $15 a month.

Elden Ring is ripe for an HBO Max animated series

FromSoftware's latest dark-fantasy epic Elden Ring has been out for less than two months, but it's already proven to be another landmark video game in the medium. The way it transcends what's been considered the norm in games of its genre is akin to the impact the likes of Super Mario 64, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had at the time of their releases. With Elden Ring, the game takes FromSoftware's past Souls-like titles like Dark Souls III, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and creates an ambitious open-world action RPG by blending them with the rewarding level of exploration and traversal in Skyrim and Breath of the Wild.

However, as acclaimed as this new IP is as a game, it has boundless potential outside of the format as well. It seems that Bandai Namco recognizes that too, as a press release from the Japanese video game publisher stated that "We will continue to expand Elden Ring, not only as a game but using all parts of the IP (such as characters) in various ways, so please look forward to it." Even before this, it could've been seen as foreshadowing ever since it was announced that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin helped write the foundational lore for Elden Ring's world of the Lands Between. With the game's marketing, Martin's ties to HBO for Game of Thrones projects, and the grand scope of the game's lore, Elden Ring makes a strong case for making an HBO Max animated series its next site of grace.

HBO Max is developing a prequel series for Stephen King’s It

It may soon be time to move back to Derry. Variety is reporting that HBO Max is developing a prequel series for Stephen King's It. Additionally, Andy Muschietti, the director of It: Part One and It: Part Two, is attached to the series as an executive producer alongside his wife Barbara Muschietti.

The Muschiettis are reportedly working on the story with their fellow executive producer Jason Fuchs, who will write the script. Andy Muschietti is also slated to direct the first episode if it goes to series. Warner Bros. Television is producing the potential show for HBO Max, and a writers' room has already been opened.

HBO Max headed to 15 more European nations in March

HBO Max today announced that its second wave of European expansion is coming on March 8, 2022. Some 15 countries will be added, following the initial European launch in October 2021.

On deck are: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
