Panasonic’s 2013 over-the-ear headphones

Not to be outdone by the likes of Monster, Velodyne, PDP, or any other of the dozens of headphone manufacturers at CES this year, Panasonic has pulled the curtain back on their new lineup of over-ear headphones. We realize that headphones might not be the first product that comes to mind when you hear the name Panasonic, but they’re no slouch when it comes to audio. We haven’t heard the HXD3E’s firsthand quite yet, but until then here’s a quick rundown of their specs:

  • 120 dB SPL
  • 10 Hz – 25 kHz frequency response
  • 32 ohms impedance
  • 30 mm drivers
  • 1.20 m cable length

We’ll get back to you with more details when we get our hands on a pair.

This $800 speaker promises private listening without headphones
Noveto N1 'invisible headphones' speaker.

At CES, we're used to seeing lots of speakers and lots of headphones. But a smart speaker that claims to offer a virtual-headphone experience is a new twist. Available in red, "ice pewter," and black colors, the No. 5909 will be at select retailers starting January 4.

In keeping with Mark Levinson's reputation for luxury audio, the No. 5909 headphones are made from anodized aluminum, with real leather on both the headband and the replaceable ear cushions. When fully charged, they're expected to get up to 34 hours of battery life when ANC is turned off and 30 hours when it's on. A fast-charge option can top you up with an additional six hours of extra playtime on a 15-minute charge.

Headphones for the Homeless Project

If you've ever worn a set of over-ear headphones during winter weather -- especially like the kind that half the country is being hit with this week -- you've probably noticed they keep your ears surprisingly warm. They can do this even if headphones no longer work as actual headphones, and that led William Petz to come up with a novel idea: What if, instead of discarding broken headphones and thus creating a lot of e-waste, we turned them into actual earmuffs and donated them to those who need that extra warmth the most?
