Roots cabinet speakers return SpeakerCraft to its origins

In case you weren’t rocking out to Fleetwood Mac with SpeakerCraft gear back in 1976, you might not know that the company known for inventing the in-wall speaker actually got its start with ordinary cabinet speakers. And that’s exactly where it will return this year. On Wednesday, the company unveiled its flashy new Roots lines of high-end speakers.

Unlike the thousands of in-wall speakers that now populate its catalogs, which come closer to the ultimate goal of invisibility every year, the Roots flaunt their style with piano gloss black, white, silver, red or yellow finishes. Rounded edges and accents give them a look almost reminiscent of the Kanto SYD 5 iPod dock we reviewed last year.

Thhe 650, 450 and 350 bookshelf speakers will use 3.5-, 4.5- and 6.5-inch woofers, along with ½, ¾ and 1-inch silk tweeters, respectively. Speakercraft will also offer two subwoofers: the 8-inch, 200-watt model 208, and the 10-inch, 300-watt model 310. Both will offer an array of DSP and equalizer settings built right in, including loud, normal, clean, night, deep, and punch.

SpeakerCraft has not yet announced pricing or availability for any of the Roots line.

Passive or active speakers: Which setup is right for you?
Platin Audio Monaco 5.1 Tuned by THX WiSA wireless speaker package.

Is it time to revisit your speaker setup? Maybe it's not giving you the dynamic sound stage that you're looking for, or maybe it's lacking in low end. Maybe you only have a small Bluetooth speaker that isn't delivering full-fledged jam-out power, maybe your analog system isn't giving you the digital inputs you now need for streaming, or maybe you're just bored and looking for some new speakers to change things up.

If you're already the owner of a receiver/amplifier-based AV or sound system, you're likely already familiar with traditional passive speakers. If so, you may know that one of the ways to sonically change things up is to swap them out. Each brand and style of speaker bring its own characteristics and is the most immediate way to notice a change in sound or an upgrade in sound quality. Sure, maybe you're happy with your old garage speakers that have been reliable since high school, but you might be missing out on a depth of sound that you never knew was possible.

JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth Speaker -- $100, was $130

We start our Prime Day speaker deals with the JPL Flip 5. The JBL Flip 6 appears in Digital Trends' best speakers as the top option if you want a portable Bluetooth speaker, but its predecessor, the JBL Flip 5, remains a worthy purchase because it comes with most of the same features. The first thing that music lovers will appreciate about the JBL Flip 5 is its racetrack-shaped driver, which delivers high output and booming bass despite the Bluetooth speaker's relatively small size. It also supports JBL's PartyBoost, which allows you to pair two JBL speakers that are compatible with the feature to create stereo sound, or multiple speakers for even larger sound to cover a wider area.
