Samsung looks to up the game in its smart TVs by adding PlayStation Now

Over the past few days, Samsung has been announcing that its 2016 smart TV lineup is going to get a whole lot smarter. While the previously announced new features allow it to power your smart home and remain more secure, the latest feature announced is all about fun.

While Samsung’s smart TVs have had built-in games already, the company announced yesterday that its gaming lineup is about to get much more robust with the addition of Sony’s PlayStation Now service. With the addition of the service, owners of Samsung smart TVs will be able to play more than 100 downloadable and 400 streaming games.

“Samsung’s 2016 Smart TV lineup is a direct response to the expectation of consumers that their TVs should be more than just a device on which to watch content,” Samsung’s vice president of display business Youngchan Kim said in a prepared statement. “The new Smart TV gaming service is just one feature of a TV that offers all-round entertainment. Our game offering will continue to expand, as Samsung partners with publishers of popular games.”

In addition to the TV, users will need a few things in order to use PlayStation Now. First, the service requires a 5Mbps Internet connection or better, and to actually play the games, you’ll need a DualShock 4 controller from Sony. A subscription to the service costs $20 per month, but a seven-day free trial is available.

In November, Sony added over 100 PlayStation 3 games to the service’s unlimited-play lineup, bringing to total to over 300 games. Recently added games include a number of games in the Resident Evil franchise, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Dead Rising 2, Mega Man 9, Strider, Bionic Commando Rearmed, and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

Samsung will be showing off its upgraded game service at CES next week alongside its new SmartThings Hub and GAIA security solution, all of which will feature heavily in the company’s 2016 smart TV lineup.

PlayStation Plus’ July game catalog is absolutely stacked

PlayStation announced its PlayStation Plus catalog for July, and it's one of the most packed lineups we've seen in a while. It's not only a great mix of genres (including VR) but it features some well-known franchises as well as indies. They're all coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members on July 16.

Arguably, the two largest games are Remnant 2 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. The former is a third-person Soulslike shooter (yes that combination is possible) with procedurally generated areas and quests. It's a direct sequel to the popular Remnant: From the Ashes, so if you're looking for more of its unique blend of gameplay elements, this might be a good pick. Unfortunately, this is the standard edition, so you won't get access to the The Awakened King DLC

This 4-year-old PlayStation game is topping the sales charts

Mat Piscatella, executive director of games at consumer tracking firm Circana, posted his monthly analysis of games sales on Monday for May 2024. His findings show that spending on video games and hardware are down 6% compared to May of last year, but overall year-to-date spending is 2% higher. So video game sales are generally stagnant, trending downward.

However, there is some good news here for PlayStation. Ghost of Tsushima, which came out on May 16 for PC, hit the top spot on the top-selling games chart, beating other new releases like Homeworld 3 (at No. 14) and F1 24 (at No. 18). Other Sony games in the top 20 include Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

We're four years into the PlayStation 5's lifecycle, which means that we've likely hit the halfway point. Console generations tend to last around eight years these days, so it's not impossible that we'll get a PlayStation 6 by 2028. While it might seem way too early to start anticipating a far off console (and it is), the reality is that the groundwork for it is likely being laid as we speak. Large scale exclusives can take well over four years to produce, which means that some PS6 games could be in the works right this second.

Some of those games seem like foregone conclusions. We'll likely see new games in the God of War and Horizon series, as well as new IP from studios like Housemarque. As for the rest? We already have some firm ideas about what games will land on Sony's next console. That's partially thanks to studio confirmation, leaks, and some good old fashioned common sense. Here our best guesses as to what we might be playing on a shiny new PlayStation by 2030.
