Samsung may tease possible new TVs, smart home devices at March 2 event

CES is typically the time and place where most big TV brands show off their latest and greatest models, Samsung might have been holding back this year. The company’s TV division — Samsung Visual Display — has issued an invitation to an “Unbox & Discover” livestreamed event scheduled for March 2, where it “will share its vision for how the company’s latest innovative products are set to redefine the role of the TV through cutting-edge technologies, beautiful design, and impactful partnerships.”

What exactly does this mean? There are a few possibilities. Given that Samsung used CES 2021 to announce its 2021 Neo QLED TVs, which use the latest mini-LED backlights, as well as its first MicroLED TV that doesn’t require professional installation, it’s unlikely that it’s going to use this event to launch yet another kind of TV.

But if it were to show off a new TV, the odds favor a debut of Samsung’s QD Display technology, a quantum dot-enhanced OLED TV that the rest of the industry refers to as QD-OLED. A QD Display TV would certainly count as “cutting-edge” technology.

As exciting as the debut of an entirely new TV display would be, a more plausible highlight would be Samsung’s expansion of its smart home ambitions, with its TVs taking on the role of central hub and companion.

This could be the “impactful partnerships” mentioned in the teaser. In 2018, Samsung partnered with ADT to deliver a SmartThings-based home security system, which included the ability to view security camera feeds on Samsung TVs. We could be introduced to more smart devices and services that tie into the SmartThings ecosystem.

In 2020, Samsung launched the Samsung Health app on its smart TVs and smartwatches, a move that mirrors Apple Fitness+, which is offered on the Apple TV and tracked via the Apple Watch. Neither Samsung Health nor Apple Fitness+ offers live classes, which has been the hallmark of fitness giant Peloton. There’s a chance Samsung could move into the live class model, maybe even with Peloton’s help — Peloton has already struck such a partnership with Roku.

Now that the Las Vegas dust from CES 2022 has been laundered from my wardrobe, I look back at the big TV announcements that were made at the show and find myself more excited than usual to start this year's TV review season. I expect a steady flood of TVs starting this spring, from big-name brands like Sony, LG, Samsung, Hisense, and TCL. And among the torrent of various sizes and models are some standout offerings that I'm especially eager to test.

Here's a rundown of the TVs I'm most excited for in 2022. I suppose you could also call this my predictive list of the Best TVs of 2022. We'll just have to see how that plays out.

Amazon fall hardware event: Home robot, flying drone, and new Alexa devices

Amazon didn't disappoint at its annual fall September event, where the company announced a slew of new devices. Notably, there was no refresh of its Echo smart speaker line, which makes sense given it was refreshed in a tremendous way at last year's event. Nevertheless, there was no shortage of exciting product announcements that covered the gamut.

New products mostly centered around the smart home, including an ambitious Alexa-powered robot called Astro, as well as a couple of neat smart displays that aim to help families stay connected with one another. There's a ton to unpack, but here is all the exciting news to come out from Amazon's September 2021 event.

Similar to last year's show, the Amazon event was a private event that was invite only. The livestream had plenty of announcements that covered Amazon and it various properties, like Ring and Blink. Unlike previous years, this Amazon event was strictly a smart home affair.

Samsung reveals 76-inch MicroLED, adds TikTok to all of its 2021 TVs

Today, at its virtual Unbox & Discover 2021 event, Samsung formally announced its entire line of 2021 TVs and soundbars, and shared news that it will be bringing a 76-inch version of its MicroLED TV to the U.S. market "in the future." The company reiterated many of its previously announced models and specs, including 8K and 4K Neo QLED TVs featuring Mini-LED backlights and a new, full-sun version of its Terrace outdoor TV. Samsung also said it plans to roll out support for TikTok on all of its 2021 smart TVs later this year. Here's everything Samsung announced.
MicroLED TV gets smaller

One of the biggest pieces of news coming out of CES 2021 was Samsung's announcement that its MicroLED technology had moved from being a display that could only be installed by professionals -- and at very large sizes -- to a fully self-contained TV that anyone (with enough money) could buy and set up themselves.
