Sirius Satellite Radio today announced they’d closed the subscriber gap with rival XM Satellite Radio. New figures revealed by the company show they’ve recently grown to over 3 million subscribers.
XM Satellite Radio, by contrast, last projected they had over 5 million subscribers. The two services are competing against one another in a still developing technology market and have attempted lately to one up each other with more diverse programming as well as well known celebrities. Sirius has had the most public impact in the latter regard, signing Howard Stern to a five year, multi-million dollar agreement last year. Stern is set to debut on Sirius on Jan. 9.
Sirius added they were expecting a strong year-end. As of 12:24 p.m. EST, Sirius was trading up 0.19 at 7.02, while XM was up 0.13 at 29.23.
