While there are other players in the live TV streaming space, right now Sling TV and PlayStation Vue are the two biggest, with each service constantly trying to one up the other. One of the PlayStation Vue’s biggest advantages has been content from major networks, but Sling is catching up, with on-demand content from NBC coming to the streamer.

Sling announced the news in a post on its blog Wednesday, pointing out that all of its customers can now watch on-demand episodes of The Voice, America’s Got Talent, or Running Wild with Bear Grylls. Until now, only customers living in 10 markets where local NBC affiliates were carried on the streaming service had access to those shows.

Shows will be available on demand the day after the show airs live, with back episodes of some shows available as well. In order to access NBC on-demand, you’ll need to be a subscriber to the $25 per month Sling Blue package. Customers of the $20 per month Sling Orange package will have to add Blue in order to watch NBC, though the company offers a $5 per month discount to those subscribing to both packages, bringing the total to $40 per month.

This is the second major network to offer on-demand content to Sling TV customers — Fox was added when the company introduced the Blue package, which was in beta at the time. PlayStation Vue also offers on-demand content from ABC to all of its customers, while ABC is currently only available to Sling TV customers in a few markets via the $5 per month Broadcast Extra package.

Earlier this month, Sling TV became the first live TV service to offer the NFL Network and NFL Redzone, with the former available to Sling Blue customers and the latter available in the Sports Extra package. Both channels are also coming to PlayStation Vue, likely in a similar fashion, but have yet to launch on the service.

NBC is available to Sling Blue customers starting Wednesday, so if you’re a subscriber and not yet seeing it, have patience, as it should appear very soon.

YouTube TV takes the No. 1 streaming spot with 5 million subscribers
YouTube TV on Roku.

There's a new No. 1 in the world of live TV streaming in the United States. The leader, apparently, is YouTube TV.

In a blog post penned by Christian Oestlien, VP of Product Management for YouTube TV and Connected TV, the company says "today, we're humbled that 5 million of you are currently on this journey with us." That's some 2 million more subscribers since the last time we got an update in October 2020, when YouTube TV crowed about having "more than 3 million" subscribers. The new 5 million number also includes those who are in the trial period, YouTube TV said.

Dish and Sling TV also drop Russia Today channel
RT America no longer is available on Sling TV or Dish.

Sling TV — the third-largest live TV streaming service in the United States with nearly 2.5 million paid subscriptions — has dropped the Russia Today channel following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, parent company Dish confirmed to Digital Trends on Friday afternoon. The same goes for Dish, the satellite arm of the media carrier. It's not clear exactly when RT America became unavailable, but it was still being streamed on Sling TV as of Wednesday, March 2. As of the afternoon of March 4, the channel was unavailable.

CNN on Thursday reported that RT America ceased production and laid off most of its staff, effectively spelling the death of the news channel, which couldn't very well continue with reruns amid the current crisis. That effectively makes dropping the channel moot, if not at least a little symbolic.

Sling TV finishes 2021 with a slight amount of growth
Sling TV.

Sling TV closed out 2021 with 2.486 million subscribers, parent company Dish reported today. That's down about 70,000 subscribers for the quarter, but up about 12,000 year over year, and up about 175,000 subs from two years ago.

In other words, another year of mostly the same for Sling, which hasn't seen growth of more than 20,300 subscribers in the past eight quarters.
