Spotify Connect makes the jump to Amazon’s Fire TV

spotify expands support to amazon fire tv android
Spotify announced today that it has expanded compatibility for its Spotify Connect feature to allow users to play and control their tunes via Amazon’s Fire TV set-top box. Available only for Spotify Premium members, listeners can now use the Spotify app for mobile phones or tablets to connect their Spotify libraries with Amazon’s new set-top box.

There are several new applications available to users thanks to the expansion. Say you have some friends over in your living room, you’re streaming some music with the service via your smartphone on your hi-fi sound system, and you realize you need to step outside away from the noise to make an important phone call. Instead of inconveniently having to switch to some other music source (iTunes, CD, vinyl, etc.) or nixing the tunes altogether to make the call, you can now simply alternate sources with Spotify Connect and push the music to the Fire TV.

With music streaming via Spotify Connect from your smartphone to the Amazon set-top box (and, in turn, its respective audio output system), you’re free to walk off with smartphone in-hand, make calls, use other smartphone apps, or even stroll right out of Wi-Fi range, all without causing a single break in the jams.

While the new feature is only available to Spotify’s Premium subscribers, the company is currently offering a 30-day free trial for Spotify Premium, in case you’ve got a Fire TV and want to give the new feature a try first without committing to $10 per month.

From its original price of $200, a $30 discount knocks it down to $170, but if you want to take advantage of this bargain, it's highly recommended that you buy the device right now. That's because stocks may not last until the end of the shopping event on July 12. Don't delay your purchase until the last minute, or else you might miss out.

Why you should buy the Nvidia Shield
The Nvidia Shield is in our roundup of the best streaming devices as the next-best streaming device after the Apple TV 4K. Amazon’s best Fire TV Stick is 55% off in its 4th of July sale
Two Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max sticks in hand.

While most modern TVs tend to have some form of smart TV platform, that doesn't mean it will be any good or work with your ecosystem. That's why streaming sticks like the Fire TV are great; it works for TVs without a smart TV platform and allows you to be part of an ecosystem you're familiar with. There's even a great 4th of July sale going on right now on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max from Amazon, bringing it down to $25 rather than $55.

Why you should buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max
With so many options for Fire Sticks, it can be hard to pick between the Fire TV Stick vs. Fire TV Stick 4K Max vs. Fire TV Cube, especially if you've just started taking a look at Fire TV sticks. Well, the long and short of it is that the Fire TV Stick 4k Max is likely what you want to aim for since the Cube has a ton of more complex features and has an associated higher cost, while the Fire TV Stick 4k is an older version of the Max that's 60% less powerful. One of the most significant upgrades over the previous version is the inclusion of Wi-Fi 6, which gives you a more stable and faster connection overall when working with Wi-Fi 6 routers. It also means you don't have to spring for Amazon's ethernet adaptor, which is overpriced and clunky; at that point, you might as well go for the Cube.

How we test streaming video devices
The box for the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max.

One of the benefits of being Digital Trends is that we get to test a lot of things that simply aren’t easily available or replaceable should they not work out for the average person. That’s why we put so much work into testing TVs, for one example. Or full soundbar setups, for another.

Other times it’s because we’re able to take products for a test drive before they go on sale. Like video games, or computers and phones. That’s good because it helps you make a relatively expensive and important purchase decision.
