You can now buy TCL’s 7.1.4-channel, 860-watt soundbar for $600

In May, TCL formally announced its new soundbar lineup for 2024. At the very top sat the TCL Q85H, a 7.1.4-channel, 860-watt Dolby Atmos- and DTS:X-capable beast with a surprisingly reasonable price: $1,000. Today, you can buy the Q85H for the first time, and both Amazon and BestBuy have set their prices even lower at just $600.

Considering the Q85H’s specs, that’s a stunningly small amount to pay. In case you missed the original launch, let’s quickly recap.

As a Q Class soundbar, it has true multichannel sound thanks to multiples drivers in the main soundbar and a wireless subwoofer, plus separate wireless surround speakers. The main bar and the surrounds both have up-firing drivers to help deliver the overhead sounds we often associate with formats like Dolby Atmos.

It’s also compatible with DTS:X, a less commonly used object-based surround sound format that might be about to get a lot more popular thanks to the support of IMAX Enhanced by Disney+.

Unlike a lot of high-end soundbars that just have a single HDMI connection to the TV, the Q85H has an HDMI input, which means you can connect external devices like streaming media players, Blu-ray players, or game consoles, which make it handy for TVs that are already connected to a lot of devices.

The Q85H will passthrough 4K video with Dolby Vision, but some advanced HDMI 2.1 formats like variable refresh rate (VRR) or high frame rates like 120Hz are unfortunately absent, so gamers may want to take that into consideration before connecting their PlayStation 5 or Xbox to the soundbar’s input.

It has Wi-Fi ,but no advanced streaming options like Tidal Connect, Spotify Connect, or Google Cast. It’s limited to Apple’s AirPlay 2 media streaming and it can be used to receive software updates. Still, you get a decent number of physical inputs. In addition to HDMI: optical, analog, and USB, plus Bluetooth streaming.

The Q85H comes with its own remote, but you can also operate it using the TCL Home app. The app contains a room correction feature, which is very rare on sound systemw at this price. Finally, the soundbar is also Roku TV Ready, which means you can control it from the on-screen menus of any Roku TV.

Nakamichi increases the price of its Dragon 11.4.6 soundbar
Nakamichi Dragon Surround System Review

Nakamichi says that it can no longer afford to sell its wild, 11.4.6-channel Dragon soundbar system for its original price of $3,500. Once the original pre-order inventory of 1,000 units has been spoken for, the company will up the price of the Dragon to $3,900.

Preorders on the first batch of 1,000 Dragons haven't started yet. They begin on August 3 at 9 a.m. PT.  It's possible that Nakamichi is using the threat of a price increase as a stick to ensure that its first 1,000 units see rapid sales, however, the company claims it has to charge more in order to offset unexpected costs associated with both the production of the Dragon as well as complexities involved in the shipment of these systems to customers.

TCL’s 2023 soundbars are affordable, but lack a key feature
2023 TCL soundbars.

TCL has released its 2023 soundbar lineup, which consists of five new models ranging in price from $150 to $280. They offer features like wireless subwoofers and, in some cases, Dolby 5.1 surround sound. But none of the speakers is compatible with Dolby Atmos, the increasingly popular, immersive 3D surround format used by Netflix and other top streaming video services.

LG, Samsung, Sony, and even Roku make soundbars that are designed to work with their TVs -- typically offering some kind of audio sync system that lets the TV's built-in speakers share the audio load with the soundbar. Samsung takes this even further by letting you stream audio from your compatible Samsung TV to your soundbar, wirelessly, with Dolby Atmos support. However, with the exception of being Roku TV Ready (which lets you control the soundbar's settings using a Roku TV on-screen interface), TCL's new models appear to avoid any special features that are optimized for use with the company's 2023 TVs.

Nakamichi’s wild Dragon 11.4.6 Dolby Atmos soundbar goes up for preorder this week
Nakamichi Dragon soundbar with subwoofers and Omni Motion Reference surrounds.

Nakamichi's epic Dragon 11.4.6 Dolby Atmos soundbar, which debuted at CES 2023, is about to go up for preorder starting at 9 a.m. PT on April 26. But instead of the usual preorder process, Nakamichi has decided to make the first Dragons off the line limited editions. Officially, it will be called the Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 Home Surround Sound System 75th Anniversary World Premiere Edition, and only 500 will be made.

Nakamichi has set the price at $3,499. That includes free shipping, but apparently only to U.S. residents. In a footnote on the preorder site, it says that Nakamichi initially planned to offer international shipping too, but had to reevaluate those plans after it discovered the logistics company it's using (eBay’s Global Shipping Program, for some reason) has a maximum weight and dollar value threshold, which the Dragon exceeds by almost $1,000. I guess some dragons don't fly.
