The backers of the Blu-ray Disc format got a new ally today as the Universal Music Group, which has one of the most extensive lists of record labels and catalogs of music in the industry, signed on as a contributing member to the optical disc’s trade group.
The joining by the Universal Music Group to the Blu-ray Disc Association continues to bolster the over 140 members. Other major contributors signed on to back the new optical disc format which can hold 25GB of data on a single layer include Apple, HP, Panasonic, Samsung, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney Pictures and Television.
“The delivery of both high-definition video and multi-channel audio technologies is becoming increasingly important,” stated Larry Kenswil, President of eLabs, UMG’s new media and technologies division. “We recognize that Blu-ray Disc has the capacity, functionality and interactivity both artists and music fans demand. We intend to work closely with the BDA in order to represent the unique requirements of the music industry in the format creation process.”
