Use Your New iPod with Old Accessories

If you’ve ever attempted to use your brand new iPhone 3G, iPod touch or nano with an old iPod accessory, you’ve probably figured out that they won’t work properly with all the old docks, speaker systems and other gadgets you’ve accumulated. Scosche gives iPod users a way to save them with the PassPORT Home Dock, announced Monday, which adapts the new models to work with old accessories.

The incompatibility stems from a difference in voltage: Old models charged on 12V (the standard for FireWire) while new models charge on 5V (the standard for USB). The PassPORT just acts as a transformer to change the old voltage to the new voltage, and passes A/V signals through untouched. It works with the iPhone 3G, iPod touch second generation, and the iPod nano fourth generation.

The docking station is available immediately through Scosche and Amazon for $40. It will also begin retailing at Wal-Mart in May.

If you know me even the slightest bit, you’ll know that I’m a big Apple fan. I have an iPad, Apple Watch, and multiple Macs. And even though I’ve been diving into the world of Android phones, my primary device is still an iPhone 14 Pro. I also always have my AirPods Pro 2 with me, whether that’s at home or when I’m out at Disney parks — they're always on me in some way or another.

But as much as I like Apple, there are certainly some things that will make me scratch my head and go “Huh?” The latest one is what appears to be a new patent held by Apple that could lead to an AirPods case with an integrated interactive touchscreen.

The Huawei Watch Buds is a smartwatch with a pair of true wireless headphones inside, and the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio is a 4G phone that stores a pair of earbuds in the back.

It’s a bizarre niche that I’m surprised contains two products. I’ve used them, so it's my duty to report that both are a bit silly — and I don’t want to use any more of them, thank you very much. However, for the few people out there thinking they want to buy one, this is what they're like. For everyone else, you get to marvel at two of the oddest tech products seen in a while.
