Viewers Could See Google Ads on DirecTV Soon

Google Inc said on Wednesday it will sell advertising spots on 11 cable networks carried by satellite television operator DirecTV Group.

The Google TV Ads system will handle the sales of commercial spots for such networks as Bloomberg, Fox Business and TV Guide.

Google TV Ads, which was launched in 2008, is a marketplace where advertisers can buy national advertising inventory on networks carried by Dish Network Corp and now also DirecTV.

Satellite and cable operators typically sell a limited number of commercial spots themselves, alongside spots sold by cable networks and their advertising agencies.

Terms of the new partnership were not disclosed.

Separately Google announced in May its plans for GoogleTV — an on-screen search box that allows viewers to look through live programs, DVR recordings and the Web.

Shares of DirecTV fell 1.5 percent to $38.82 but fared better than the 2 percent decline in the broader market.

This humble but great 50-inch TCL TV is under $300 on Labor Day
The TCL 50-inch Q Class 4K QLED Google TV's home screen.

If you want a new TV on the cheap, Labor Day TV sales are the time to strike. For example, this 50-inch TCL Q Class 4K QLED Google TV is down to just $298. That's $252 off of its regular $550. And, to top it off, it is one of Walmart's (that's where the deal is being hosted) highest-rated TVs and a new 2024 offering to boot. Check it out yourself by tapping the button below, or keep reading to see our take.

Why you should buy the TCL 50-inch Q Class 4K QLED Google TV
There aren't a ton of surprises here and that's a good thing. Typically, you might worry that a TV at this price would be "missing" something and that's just really not the case here. For one, you're getting a 4K TV of a pretty standard size with Dolby Atmos Audio and HDR10+ technology. While you might expect to find standard LED tech at this level, we even get the "upgrade" to make it a QLED TV, which is a pretty predictable move for the price range. It even has relatively new things like the new ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) for gaming that you've surely heard about by now, but should know makes gaming more fluid if you haven't, and a personal audio output to your headphones for TV via Bluetooth.

Don’t throw out that old Chromecast with Google TV just yet
Chromecast with Google TV.

If one thing is apparent from the announcement of the new Google TV Streamer -- whose name is right down there with the Onn 4K Streaming Device -- it’s this: I’m not going to be getting rid of my old Chromecast with Google TV anytime soon. Especially now that Google has announced it's not going to make anymore.

And that’s despite the fact that Google says its new streamer is better in so many ways and that it’s the best Google TV device. And, yeah, it might well be, with a faster processor and four times more storage. And with support for the Thread and Matter smartphone standards. And with Ethernet. And an improved remote. And Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, with spatial audio if you’re using Pixel Buds.

The Google TV Streamer added one feature that all such devices need
The rear of the Google TV Streamer device.

When a company drops a handful of press images alongside the announcement of a new product, we rarely get to see the back of the thing. And I get it — there's nothing particularly photogenic about a bunch of ports and cords. And that's mostly true of the new Google TV Streamer, which looks more like a router than it does a successor to the venerable Chromecast dongle.

But we did get the briefest glimpse of the rear of the device in Google's promo video. In it, you see the USB-C power cable and a hint of the Ethernet port. And those are great.
