NBC’s app joins Vizio SmartCast just in time for the ‘Will & Grace’ revival

vizio smartcast tv update
When it launched earlier in 2017, Vizio SmartCast TV hit select models in the Vizio’s 2017 TV lineup, an interface update that now allows viewers to access their favorite streaming services straight from their remote control. Previously, users had to cast content to their Vizio TVs from a tablet or their smartphone via the Vizio SmartCast Mobile app, a mobile control interface that our reviewers felt was clunky when we were testing the 2016 Vizio M-Series. On September 6, Vizio announced the new service will roll out to all 2016 Vizio Smartcast E-Series, M-Series, and P-Series TVs via an online update.

The return to a more classic remote-driven TV lineup for 2017 came with the news that Vizio was planning on launching this built-in Smart TV interface as an update. That said, new Vizio SmartCast models still feature built-in Chromecast functionality (accessed via the Vizio Smartcast Mobile app), so those fond of casting content to their TV still have that option. Services available for streaming straight from the built-in interface include Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, FandangoNow, Google Play Movies, and Vudu. As of November, users can also access the NBC app, which carries on-demand episode of the network’s various TV series.

“The introduction of Vizio SmartCast TV is all about giving consumers additional options when it comes to accessing their favorite content,” Vizio’s Chief Technology Officer Matt McRae said in a press release. “We focused on developing a best-in-class smart platform for all users; from traditional TV fans who enjoy a dedicated remote control, to digital natives and second screen users who love using their mobile devices to search and control their viewing experience. 2017 is all about expanding SmartCast to give users multiple ways to stream the entertainment they love, the way they want it.”

One cool element of the new SmartCast TV interface is that it pairs up with the SmartCast Mobile app, meaning that viewers can pick a show from their remote control in the living room, and play and pause the show on their mobile device or tablet from any room in the house. SmartCast TV also lets users of multiple streaming apps search for content across multiple apps at once, making it easy to find that film or TV series you have been looking for, regardless of what service is hosting it.

The automatic internet update is currently rolling out to eligible 2017 Vizio SmartCast P-Series and M-Series models, but it will hit other models — including the 2017 Smartcast E-Series — later this summer. It is worth noting that some owners will need a new SmartCast remote, which features a new button for quick access to the SmartCast TV interface. The good news is that owners of eligible TVs can get that remote for free or for a nominal fee, via a special page on Vizio’s website.

If you are looking for more information about whether your Vizio TV will get the new functionality, more information can be found on Vizio’s SmartCast TV website.

Update: Added news that the NBC app is now supported.

HBO Max app is now available on Vizio SmartCast TVs
HBO Max on Vizio SmartCast.

You no longer have to resort to third-party measures to watch HBO Max on your Vizio television. Vizio's built-in SmartCast operating system now has an HBO Max app of its very own, meaning that you now have one fewer reason to use some other streaming hardware like a Roku player or Amazon Fire TV device to catch up on Succession ahead of Season 3's premiere this fall.

At launch, the Vizio implementation will add a carousel on the SmartCast home screen that features content from HBO Max that's currently available for free. That includes featured episodes from Game of Thrones, Euphoria, and Perry Mason — all of which are available on the legacy HBO service — as well as new HBO Max originals like Love Life and Raised by Wolves, for starters.

Vizio updates its SmartCast TV software with voice commands and better search
Vizio SmartCast 2021 with voice commands

It's no secret that many of today's smart TVs aren't really all that intelligent. Slow and unintuitive navigation and clunky user interfaces still plague this space, and consumers sometimes opt for some sort of set-top box, even when their TV has streaming apps built in. Fortunately, Vizio's smart TVs don't fall into that category, thanks in no small part to its user-friendly SmartCast interface -- which just got a major upgrade.

The update, which is live on all SmartCast-enabled TVs, adds new voice-command capability, new free TV channels, a redesigned electronic program guide. and expanded navigation features for easier search and discovery. Vizio also claims that SmartCast will perform faster and more seamlessly after the update.

How to download apps on a Samsung smart TV
Samsung 82-inch 4K smart TV.

In the landscape of smart TVs, Tizen-powered Samsung sets offer some of the greatest features on top of amazing picture quality. Whether this is your first TV purchase in several years or you're new to Samsung's smart TV interface, we're here to teach you about the Samsung Smart Hub -- your TV's gateway to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, news and weather content, web browsing, and more. In this guide, we'll go over how to download, add, and arrange apps on your new Samsung smart TV. Grab your remote, and let's get started.
Step 1
First off, you'll want to make sure your TV is connected to your home network. While certain features of your Samsung's Smart Hub will function without an internet connection, you'll want your TV using solid Wi-Fi for downloading apps.

Step 2
Press the Home or Smart Hub button on your TV remote. Depending on the year and model of your Samsung TV, the button may show an image of a house, a multicolored Smart Hub 3D square, or a button simply labeled Smart Hub.
Step 3
A horizontal pop-up menu will surface at the bottom of your TV. This is your TV's home screen, the main waypoint on your Samsung for everything from picture and sound settings to your personalized Samsung app experience. Out of the box, a new Samsung TV will include several pre-loaded apps. You'll also see Recommended and Recent Apps categories. These are all options you can highlight and select with your remote. There's more where that came from, though. To download additional apps to your TV that aren't featured on the initial home ribbon, navigate to the left of the menu, and select Apps.
