Vudu’s updated mobile app now lets you convert your discs to digital movies

If you’re looking for ways to clear out space in your living room, ditching your collection of Blu-ray and DVD movies is one option, but you don’t want to get rid of the movies themselves, fo course. For years, streaming service Vudu has offered a service to convert your physical media to digital copies. Now that process has gotten easier, as today the company is introducing Mobile Disc-to-Digital, a feature that lets you use the Vudu mobile app to move your movie collection into the cloud.

“The average movie collector owns nearly 100 DVDs and Blu-rays. We know these customers have invested a lot into building their physical movie collections,” Vudu general manager Jeremy Verba said in a statement. “As more and more customers create digital libraries, we are constantly looking for ways to help them unlock additional value from the movies they already own.”

The process is simple: scan the disc’s bar code, choose your resolution — SD or HDX (high-bitrate 1080p) — and you’re ready to go. To save time, you can scan any number of discs before choosing your resolution and completing the process. There are also restrictions in place to keep users from converting a friend’s physical collection to their own digital collection. Despite the mobile nature of the app, Mobile Disc-to-Digital conversions need to take place at the billing address of the account being used.

How much Disc-to-Digital costs depends on both the media being converted and what it is being converted to. Blu-ray to HDX costs $2 per disc, as does converting DVD to standard definition digital. If you’d like to convert a DVD to HDX, the price jumps to $5 per disc. In order to give customers a feel for the service before spending any money, all Vudu users get their first mobile conversion for free.

Mobile Disc-to-Digital isn’t available for every movie in Vudu’s catalog, though it supports nearly 8,000 titles right now. The library of available movies includes titles from Lionsgate, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, with more expected to be added in the coming months.

There are a lot of financial deterrents this year keeping people from planning summer vacations, but T-Mobile is determined to help subscribers take the vacations they've been dreaming of with its newly announced Coverage Beyond initiative. In short, Coverage Beyond aims to reduce the cost of traveling for T-Mobile's most popular coverage plans by giving subscribers three great perks: free 5G data abroad, free streaming while on flights, and a handful of other travel perks like reduced gas prices.

Some of T-Mobile's previous connection efforts gave its customers limited free low-speed data and free texting while abroad. This was a good way to reduce the stress of being out of the country for a short period, but Coverage Abroad ups the ante by offering 5GB of high-speed data to all Magenta Max and Business Unlimited Ultimate plan owners in 210 countries. In countries where it's available, that "high-speed" data may even be 5G. Magenta and most other business plan owners can also count on free high-speed international data, but only in 11 select European countries.

iOS 16 lets you pair Nintendo Switch controllers to your iPhone

Apple forgot to mention one important detail about iOS 16 at its annual WWDC conference yesterday: iPhone users will be able to play games with their Nintendo Switch Pro and Joy-Con controllers.

iOS 16 won't be released to everyone's iPhones until fall, but it is currently out as a developer preview, giving devs ample opportunities to test out and discover some of the new operating system's quirks and exploits. Riley Testut, the developer behind the Delta emulator and AltStore, shared his discovery of iOS 16 natively supporting the Nintendo Switch Pro and Joy-Con controllers, although they show up as a single device. He reported that "they work perfectly with Delta," which emulates games from SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.

Spotify’s Car Thing now lets you control your other media

Spotify has released a software update for its Car Thing companion device that gives it several new features including the ability to see and answer your incoming calls, add new items to your play queue, and control non-Spotify media. Some of the new features are only available on iOS devices, but Spotify says it is working to bring them to Android phones too.

Car Thing is a $90 device that combines a 4-inch touchscreen with a large navigation wheel, shortcut buttons, and voice recognition and connects to your phone via Bluetooth. It's designed to give you an easier way to navigate and play Spotify's content while driving and is especially handy for those who don't have Apple's CarPlay or Google's Android Auto built into their car's infotainment system. You need a Spotify Premium account to use Car Thing and the device is currently only available in the U.S.
