August smart locks open new doors for Airbnb hosts and guests

August Smart Lock Third Generation review door ajar

Leaving a key for your Airbnb guest will soon be a practice of the past, as long as you have an August smart lock installed. On Tuesday, June 26, the smart home company announced additional features in their partnership with Airbnb that promises to simplify rental access for hosts and guests alike. Now, anytime a vacationer makes a reservation in an August Smart Lock and August Smart Keypad-equipped home, August will auto-generate a customized entry code for the booking time and date. That means that hosts will no longer have to wait around for their guests to arrive, or hide keys in clever spaces. Instead, their smart lock will do all the heavy lifting for them.

“Our Smart Locks are the perfect complement to any Airbnb rental, giving hosts complete control over guest access and the freedom to manage their property from anywhere,” August Home CEO Jason Johnson said. “By expanding our Airbnb integration to include the August Smart Keypad, we’re making it simpler for guests to enter and exit a property by simply entering a security code. This makes Airbnb rentals more secure by removing the need for physical keys, which can be lost or copied.”

The collaboration between Airbnb and August will give hosts three options for providing access to their property. They can have their August lock generate a PIN code for an August Smart Keypad with one-touch locking, or give their guests mobile phone access via the August app, or for maximum convenience (for the guest), give them both the code and app access. Guests will be able to come and go as they please, without cramping their hosts’ style.

August has been a member of the Airbnb Host Assist program for a while now, which means that providing keyless access to Airbnb properties is quite straightforward. Hosts will need to link their Airbnb account and August account within the August app to begin the syncing process. For hosts who already have an August Smart Lock installed, enabling Smart Keypad access is as easy as updating their August/Airbnb settings in the app.

Then, when a guest makes a reservation, they’ll receive an email with instructions on how to access the property based on the method(s) selected by the host. Any changes to the reservation (whether it’s a different time, day, or an outright cancellation) will automatically change permissions within the August Smart Lock. And when the reservation ends, so too does guest access to the property.

What is Airbnb? What to know before becoming a guest or host
Airbnb listings on a phone.

Airbnb takes a unique approach toward lodging. Part of the "sharing economy," Airbnb offers you someone's home as a place to stay instead of a hotel. On Airbnb, you can find places to crash on your backpacking trip through Europe, or a spot to rent for a month during your internship in Los Angeles. It's also a great way to explore a town you're thinking about moving to, or finding an alternative to traditional hotel options in 2022 if you're just around for a weekend. If you want to rent out extra space in your own home, you can host through Airbnb and make money for allowing a guest to stay the night.

This all sounds pretty simple, but there's much more to Airbnb than you might imagine. What is Airbnb exactly? Here's what you need to know about the popular home-sharing site before you book a stay or become a host.
Airbnb's originås
Airbnb founders Joe Gebbia, Brian Chesky, and Nathan Blecharczyk developed the business in 2008. Initially, Gebbia and Chesky started off using their own place as a bed-and-breakfast to make a few extra bucks to pay rent. With a big design conference coming to the San Francisco area and a city full of sold-out hotels at the time, they saw a potential market for the idea and developed a website called airbedandbreakfast.com.

Lockly Flex Touch ditches the bulk in favor of a slimmer fingerprint smart lock
Lockly Flex Touch

The key to a smart lock is ease of use. Everyone wants to be able to get into their homes more easily, especially while carrying an armload of groceries, but no one wants to sacrifice security for convenience. The new Lockly Flex Touch smart lock provides the best of both worlds with easy entry and installation while maintaining strong security due to its 3D biometric fingerprint reader.

The Flex Touch allows up to 99 different fingerprints to be stored on a single lock, so that all members of your household, your extended family, and probably all of your friends could have easy entry into the home if you wanted. That's a lot of fingerprint storage. If you wanted to transmit all of these entries to another lock, you can do so through Lockly's secure eDuplicate system.

New Level smart lock may be the smallest ever made, but it has tons of features
level fashions smallest smart lock ever made copy of iphone

If there's one smart lock feature that stands out -- aside from the smarts -- it's the size. Most smart locks are large and bulky, even if they do have nice designs. Level aims to change that with the newly announced Level Lock, the smallest smart lock ever made. It's the next iteration of the company's first model, the Level Bolt smart lock that came out in 2019.

The Level Lock takes everything about that disruptive lock and miniaturizes the components, all while still retaining the look of your standard lock. It manages this smaller size by hiding the majority of the necessary technology inside the door. In a way, this adds extra security. It also hides the fact that you own a smart lock while keeping aesthetics in mind. The Level Lock is available in matte black, satin nickel, satin chrome, and polished brass.
