Secure your home from your wrist with an August lock and Apple Watch app

Smart lock companies have always aimed to make it harder for strangers to get through your front door. Now, they’re making it easier for you to do so. August, one of the original purveyors of the keyless smart lock, is now helping remove as many barriers to entry as possible when it comes to locking and unlocking your home. The latest feature to emerge from the company is the ability to control your lock with just your Apple Watch. Because why have convenience in the palm of your hand when you can just have it on your wrist?

The company has unveiled a brand-new native August Apple Watch app that allows homeowners to both lock and unlock their August-equipped doors. Regardless of what generation of August Smart Lock you may have, or which series your Apple Watch comes from, this functionality should be entirely compatible. So if you’re going out for a run or need complete a quick errand, just be sure your wearable is on, and leave your phone at home. That said, if you want to use the Auto-Unlock feature, you’ll still need to have your phone nearby.

From your Apple Watch screen, you’ll be able to view multiple locks, or set it up so that your Apple device is only capable of controlling your main lock. You can also add August Smart Lock as a watch face shortcut for easier access from your watch home screen.

In order to begin using the August Watch app, you’ll need to update your August App on your iPhone to version 6.7.10 or higher, thenensure that your watch is running Watch OS 4 or higher. Once you launch the August Apple Watch app on your wearable, you may be asked to log in on your iPhone in order to sync your lock (or locks) with your watch. From there, you should be good to go. Anyone with “owner” access to an August Lock will be able to use the functionality. If you want to temporarily promote a guest or a child to owner status, you need only open the Guest List in the August app, tap the guest you’d like to grant extra privileges to, and update the access level to owner.

How to pre-order the Apple Watch Series 7
Apple Watch Series 7 blood oxygen levels data.

The Apple Watch Series 7, which was among the new lineup of products Apple announced in September, is available for pre-order. If you’re thinking about buying a new Apple Watch Series 7, you can do so starting today, October 8. Here’s what you need to know.
What’s new?
The Apple Watch Series 7 features a few subtle design changes. Compared to the Series 6 (which you can get a great deal on now), the Retina screen is 20% larger and the bezel is thinner. All the extra space can display 50% more text and even a full keyboard. The aluminum cases are available in five colors: Midnight, starlight, Product Red, blue, and a dark hunter green. Apple also rounded the corners of the new model and created watch faces to match.

The design changes don’t just make the watch more attractive. Apple also made the screen more durable, with a thicker, crack-resistant cover. With an IPX6 rating, the Apple Watch Series 7 model can withstand exposure to dust, sand, and water.
How much does the Apple Watch Series 7 cost?
The base model starts at $399 for a 4.1mm display with GPS, but the Apple Watch Series 7 is available in multiple configurations. There are two sizes, and each size has a GPS-enabled model and a more expensive cellular-equipped counterpart. Here’s the breakdown of prices:

Don’t buy the Apple Watch Series 3 anymore — it’s not worth it

After Apple announced the long-awaited Apple Watch Series 7, you may have found your eyes, and especially your wallet, drawn to the idea of the Apple Watch Series 3 dropping its price to a downright affordable $199. While it won't have any of the features of the Series 7, like upgraded specs, improved battery life, a fancy new design, and a plethora of new features, it'll come in at $200 less, compared to the $399 Series 7. This may sound like a deal on its face. But we advise against falling for this ruse.

Here's why:
A design that hasn't aged well
First, put this timeline into perspective. Apple released the Series 3 in September 2017. The design back then didn't put it out of step with other smartwatches on the market. At release, we even praised it in our review as a "joy to use" and the "best smartwatch you can buy." That was true then, but in 2021 the design has started to show its age.

Apple's third big revelation at its September 14 "California Streaming" event was a new generation of its Apple Watch. The Series 7 is planned for release later this fall at a starting price of $399, and it will bring a host of improved features, including a larger screen with thinner borders.

The Series 7 watch runs off of the new Watch iOS8. It features a 20% larger screen with a new retina display that continues to slim down the already-skinny borders of the watch, which are now 40% thinner, clocking in at just over 1 millimeter wide.
