The Blossom 8 watering system adds features at half its predecessor's price

blossom 8 launches package 01
With concern over the conservation of water higher today than ever, it’s become increasingly important for homeowners to utilize a reliable and efficient sprinkler to tend to their yards. Understanding this, a California-based company named Blossom has just launched an upgraded version of its smart watering system called the Blossom 8. Promising to reduce the amount of guesswork associated with watering while introducing an intuitive new control scheme, the Blossom 8 aims to revolutionize the way people maintain their lawns.

In an effort to hammer home the importance of conserving water, Blossom decided to release the new Blossom 8 on March 22 — otherwise known as World Water Day. Under the hood, the Blossom 8 watering system perfectly represents what it means to make your home “smart.” Featuring a Smart Watering algorithm which collects plant information, local weather forecasts, and area-specific conditions, the system constantly formulates an adequate watering schedule to keep a lawn perfectly watered while saving valuable water.

Having a device to regularly monitor water usage offers yet another massive advantage for users; it dramatically lowers their water bills. And Blossom took this a step further with its current release, making the 8 available to purchase for a mere $99 (which is $100 cheaper than Blossom’s original). And aside from the price, the 8 boasts a few key differences when compared to the company’s inaugural release.

For starters, the Blossom 8 supports up to eight sprinkler zones — in contrast to the original’s twelve — with the company creating the device solely to be placed indoors. The 8 also boasts enhanced Wi-Fi capability, and compatible iOS and Android apps, and in terms of size it is slightly smaller than its predecessor at just shy of seven inches wide and seven inches tall. Perhaps its biggest new addition is just how easy Blossom makes actually setting up the 8 as it literally only requires removing an old sprinkler system controller, mounting the Blossom device, and downloading a smartphone app — that’s it.

Obviously, those looking to install an entire sprinkler system will have a bit larger of a project on their hands, but those with existing systems can avoid any actual digging, wiring, or installation of valves. Furthermore, the smartphone app allows any Blossom 8 owner to eaily alter their water schedule, activate an impromptu cycle, and monitor current watering cycles.

Available now via Blossom’s website, the Blossom 8 is a smart watering system that not only makes it easy to keep your lawn watered and healthy but helps keep your water bill from costing an arm and a leg.

Vivint’s new updates make its smart home system even smarter
vivint doorbell outdoor camera pro updates lifestyle 1

I've had a Vivint smart home for about 18 months, ever since reviewing the Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro and the Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro. For the most part, I find them to be incredibly smart and useful. Plus, the integration with Google and Philips Hue in particular up the "whole-home smart home" game when I can unlock my front door and have my lights turn on. This week, Vivint announced updates to the Doorbell Pro and Outdoor Camera Pro, and it's great to see that "smart" extends to the company itself. Let's dive in.
On-device recording
Vivint upgraded all of its camera products -- the Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro, Outdoor Camera Pro, and Indoor Camera Pro -- in a pretty significant way. Vivint added on-device recording for 24/7 monitoring for up to 10 days. All that footage is stored on the device, which is significant in one keyway. The previous generation of the cameras streamed footage in real-time from the cameras to a separately purchased smart hard drive. From there, if you wanted to review the footage, it would stream back over Wi-Fi to Vivint's servers, and back to your phone.

Put simply, this can cause a significant hit on your home Wi-Fi's bandwidth. With the new cameras, the footage is stored on a secure SD card locally and only transmitted when it's being streamed or viewed. Meanwhile, onboard AI will continue generating smart clips detailing what happens (people, packages, etc). Plus, aside from freeing up bandwidth on your home network, local recording storage also works even when your Wi-Fi is down. All told, it's enough to get me pretty geeked, so I'll be excited to test these things out. That's the biggest news that covers all the devices, so let's get into each device in particular.

The big selling point for Wyze's new product is its fingerprint scanner. It gives you the ability to unlock your door in a matter of seconds and negates the need to dig around in your pocket for keys or to punch in a lengthy numeric code. If you do decide to use the keypad, the Lock Bolt features Anti-Peep technology, which lets you punch additional keys before or after entering your password to confound prying eyes.

Molekule adds an Air Score to its Air Pro purifier
molekule enables air score pro

Molekule, one of the leading manufacturers of air purifers, has announced a new feature for its Air Pro purifiers. This new feature, called the Molekule Air Score, provides an easy-to-understand air quality score that shows users the levels of particles and chemicals in the surrounding air.

Molekule states that the score is combined with one of their new sensors in the Air Pro purifiers. That sensor can capture nearby VOCs (volatile organic compounds like aerosol sprays or preservatives), humidity, and CO2 levels. Then, the sensor uses the data from the air to improve the device's 'Auto Protect' mode, which is what the Air Pro uses to adjust fan speeds automatically.
