Bovines Without Borders And A Virtual Field

Imagine the virtual field – but with real cows.   That’s what scientists in Australia have been doing. They’ve spent three years developing a project with the wonderful name ofBovines Without Borders, intended to make sure cattle don’t stray from their fields.   The system creates virtual boundaries in a field using GPS technology. As a cow approaches theboundary, the battery-powered collar it wears emits a hum. If they continue, then sound becomes a low hum. When they reach the limit, the chip-fitted collar gives the cow a mild shock.   Testshave shown that the cattle learn to adapt within an hour, mostly from the sound. The collars only emit a 250 milliwatt shock, approximately the same as that from static electricity.  “It’s an invisible electric fence,” explained Commonwealth, Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation spokesman Andrew Fisher. “Theboundaries are drawn by GPS and exist only as a line on a computer. There are no wires or fixed transmitters at all. It achieves the same result as a conventional fence without posts and wire.”  However, it’ll be a while before Bovines Without Borders reach a farm near you. Since the current collar battery life is just a week, practical commercial versions are still severalyears away.

Save $60 on a Facebook Portal and upgrade your virtual Super Bowl party
amazon and best buy facebook portal mothers day deal 1

With Super Bowl LV just around the corner, football fans are thinking about virtual parties, because gathering in sports bars to watch the championship game isn't a good idea. One idea for holding virtual parties is looking through Amazon Echo deals to buy smart displays, so everyone can see each other while watching the Super Bowl. A good alternative to Echo devices is the Facebook Portal, which is on sale from Amazon with a $62 discount to lower its price to $137, from its original price of $199.

The first-generation version of the Facebook Portal is equipped with a 10.1-inch screen that's big enough to comfortably see all your friends in the virtual party. It will be easier if everyone owns a Facebook Portal, but you can also call friends on their smartphones and tablets through Messenger, with up to six people in a group call.

Alarm.com Touchless Video Doorbell rings without actually being pressed
alarm com touchless video doorbell ces 2021

The past year has been focused on health, and CES 2021 has seen a lot of different products that eliminate the need to touch a surface. The new Alarm.com Touchless Video Doorbell is a prime example of this. Take a moment and consider how useful video doorbells are: You can see and communicate with any visitor at your door without coming face-to-face, but it poses another problem. Everyone who arrives presses the doorbell or stands close to it, potentially furthering the spread of bacteria.

Germs and bacteria most commonly spread through touch. Someone ringing your doorbell or touching the knob risks picking up germs left by previous visitors. The easiest way to avoid spread is to not touch the doorbell at all.

homepod mini comparison homepod google home amazon dot 2

Your smart speakers and smart screens are really great for listening to music and controlling your smart home. But one overlooked area where they can be really useful is learning at home. Whether you're working from home, learning from afar, or even just want to brush up on some skills, many people these days are learning from their living rooms rather than classrooms.

Smart devices like Amazon's Echo products and Google's Nest devices are gaining new features (and still using old ones) designed to facilitate these new learning models. New features like Family Bell, Story Time, and more are rolling out to your devices to help you along your intellectual journey. In this article, we're going to focus on Google Assistant's abilities, but we'll link to articles where Amazon's Alexa will have similar capabilities.
Ask questions
One of the most obvious uses for a smart speaker is to get information about basically anything. In this particular category, Google definitely has a leg up over Alexa, but both can find information from the web and present it to you. Maybe you're wondering in what year Magellan circumnavigated the globe. Ask Google. How do you spell circumnavigated? I may or may not have asked Google that very question.
