Some of the coolest home tech from CES 2016

There was a time when making something “smart” meant it had an app. At last year’s CES, we saw a lot of smart-home products that basically just let you control the device with an app. At CES 2016, we saw a lot more companies that went beyond just making an app-controlled device, and started including thoughtful features that actually take advantage of those capabilities. The image gallery above displays quite a few of these innovative devices, together with a brief description of each.

Halo is one of them. It’s a connected smoke alarm, like several others we’ve seen, but it also has a weather radio built into it. That means it can also monitor for tornado warnings, natural disasters, and other alerts that are broadcast over the radio. You can get the notification on your phone, so you know if there’s a threat, even if you’re not at home. While it’s hard-wired for power, its battery backup lasts seven days, so that even if your power is out and your phone’s dead, you will be able to receive NOAA information.

Bosch is planning on bringing some of its connected appliances to the U.S. in the next couple of years, and these include a smarter way to do laundry. You can use the related app to tell the machine exactly what you’re loading into it, in case you need some guidance on how best to wash and care for your garments. It’s not something you’ll use every time you do a load, but it’s meant to be a little easier and more customized than searching Google for “how do I wash delicates?”

There were also some non-connected items that were really impressive. At NGHTV’s smart home, there was an iTouch Faucet. It replaces the handles on your sink with a control panel. You can preset the time and temperatures for cold, hot, and warm water. Set the cold button, and it will shut off automatically after, say, three seconds. That’s enough to wet your toothbrush. Pick the perfect temperature for warm, and it will always be ready to go for hand washing, without you waiting for the water to heat up.

Toto toilets are always cool, and the one we saw had a remote control, heated seat, and UV light to help kill bacteria. No app necessary, but still high-tech nonetheless.

We’re still waiting for one standard to connect and control everything in our smart home, but at least CES 2016 has revealed some cool devices that can keep us company in the meantime.

Kohler’s 2023 bathroom lineup at CES includes lots of heated toilet seats
The Numi 2.0 Smart Toilet

Kohler always makes a splash at CES, and the 2023 event is no exception. The focus was once again on elevating your daily hygiene, with a series of smart toilets, showerheads, and digital valves revealed by the manufacturer. We also got a closer look at the Stillness Bath -- a product revealed in 2022 that’s packing a ton of premium features.

Smart toilets were at the heart of Kohler’s CES 2023 reveals, as the company displayed three new entries to its porcelain throne lineup. The most luxurious of the trio is the Numi 2.0, which is expected to clock in at over $11,000. It’s integrated with Alexa for hands-free operation and comes packed with high-end features, including a bidet, a lid that automatically opens and closes, UV cleaning, and (most importantly) a heated seat.

The first day of CES 2023 is right around the corner, but Samsung isn't waiting to introduce the world to its new lineup of smart home appliances. Specifically, the Bespoke lineup is now on full display, with new smart refrigerators, smart ovens, and smart washers making an appearance.

Samsung’s Bespoke lineup has long been a premium choice for smart home shoppers -- and that trend looks to continue throughout this year. One of the biggest upgrades is for the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+, which now offers a massive 32-inch touchscreen (up from a 21.5-inch display) that’s embedded directly into its glass panel door. The screen will support the new Family Hub software, allowing you to stream your favorite shows, share photos, or check the status of connected devices.

Fluid One gives you point-and-click control of your smart home, from your smartphone

Ever wished you could use your smartphone to control your smart home, beyond just pulling up an app to turn something on or off? We're now starting to see companies create actual functionality around the Matter initiative. Fluid, a relative newcomer to the smart home field, is building a service on top of Matter to allow you to control smart devices around your home simply by pointing your phone at the device.

Fluid calls this new service Fluid One. You can point your phone at a device, and it will automatically and immediately show you options to control said device. The service also allows for location-based automation and gesture controls. For example, imagine walking around your home and having lights automatically turning on or off depending on how close you are to them.
