Ditch your cords with IKEA’s wireless charging furniture

Targeting a launch date of late Spring 2015 for the United States, IKEA has started rolling out a line of furniture in Europe that includes wireless charging pads for recharging mobile devices. Of course, the mobile devices have to be compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard in order to take advantage of the charging pads. However, IKEA will be selling adapter cases for popular smartphones that aren’t currently compatible with Qi wireless charging, specifically the iPhone 4 through iPhone 6 models and Samsung Galaxy S3 through S5 models.

Speaking about the new line of furniture, Björn Block, IKEA’s Range Manager for Lighting and Wireless Charging, said “With the help of our wireless chargers, we make charging easy, fun and convenient, by turning furniture into charging spots. We enable convenient charging throughout the home, designed for your personal needs. At the same time, we make homes more beautiful by minimizing the use of cords. Nobody likes cords, yet everyone wants a fully functional home. With our wireless chargers, it’s possible to have both.”

In addition to the wireless charging, users will also have the option of using the included USB port on the charging pads to charge devices with traditional cords. While the the charging pads can be purchased separately, IKEA will be releasing two nightstands with a built-in wireless charger as well as a floor lamp, a table lamps and a desk lamp.

IKEA will also sell a hole saw kit that will let anyone modify their current IKEA furniture in order to install one of the wireless chargers, both of which will retail for $30. This kit may also be useful in the commercial environment, ideal for restaurants and coffee shops that want to offer customers the option of wireless charging.

Ikea’s $199 Symfonisk Picture Frame Speaker lets you hang your tunes on a wall

Ikea's third collaborative project with Sonos under the Symfonisk brand is the $199 Symfonisk Picture Frame Speaker, a 22 by 16-inch rectangular Wi-Fi speaker that can be hung in portrait or landscape orientation on a wall, or sat freestanding on a flat surface. It goes on sale at Ikea-usa.com and in stores on July 15. At that time, buyers will be able to choose between black or white frame colors, and a dark grey or light grey geometric print as the speaker grille/artwork. Two additional print options will be available at launch for $20 each.

In typical Sonos fashion, there has been no discussion of the Picture Frame Speaker's power in terms of watts. Instead, the company describes it as "room-filling" -- a term it uses for many of its speakers. Sonos put a focus on the architecture of the speaker, specifically the design of the tweeter. It uses a special diffuser to help high-frequency sounds spread out around a room.

Ikea hastily removes product page for its Sonos wall art speaker

It seems that Ikea inadvertently confirmed the existence of a new Sonos-powered smart speaker for the Symfonisk product line. A product page on the company's website, spotted by The Verge on June 1, detailed a Symfonisk "picture frame with Wi-Fi speaker," priced at $199. The product page has since been removed.

"You can choose to hang it on its own on the wall as an eye-catcher, match it with your other pictures on a wall, place it on the floor, or lean it against a wall,” Ikea’s site reportedly said. The term "picture frame" may be too literal -- it doesn't look like people will be able to put any art they like on the speaker's front, but there will likely be a choice of decor options created in an acoustically transparent fabric.
