FBI Warning On E-Mail Spam

The FBI has issued a warning about spam e-mail that purports to be from the agency that’s being sent to individuals.   It looks real enough, bearing theofficial seal and banner, along with a picture of agency director Robert Mueller. But it’s all spam, a story on Vnunet reports.   "The FBI doesnot send out emails soliciting personal information from citizens," the agency said in its warning. "The social engineering technique of using the FBI’s name is designed to intimidate andconvince the recipient that the email is legitimate. Please be cautious of any unsolicited email referencing the FBI, Robert Mueller or any other FBI official endorsing any type of internetactivity."   However, since the mails reportedly tell people of a lottery win or an inheritance left by a long-lost relative, that alone should be enough to raise suspicions amongrecipients. Other mails supposedly from the FBI evidently offer website monitoring and contain attached malware.
