This retro robot vacuum is one of my favorite gadgets at IFA 2024

IFA 2024 has officially opened its doors to the public, marking the 100th anniversary of the iconic event. Hundreds of consumer electronics brands will be at the show — including Samsung, Acer, and Lenovo — and it’s shaping up to be another big year for the convention. I was invited to preview the sprawling IFA grounds ahead of its kickoff, and while much was still under construction, IFA 100 Years: The Exhibition was largely complete. That’s where I stumbled upon the Karcher RC 3000 — a robot vacuum from 2003 that served as a precursor to many of today’s most prominent devices.

IFA 100 Years: The Exhibition looks back at key innovations in the consumer electronics industry. From gaming and radio to video and home appliances, it captures key moments that shaped our digital lives over the past 10 decades. And while you’ll find plenty of innovative devices in The Exhibition, the Karcher RC 3000 is undoubtedly one of the coolest smart home products in the showcase.

The Karcher RC 3000 was first launched in 2003. It wasn’t the first-ever robot vacuum (many arrived in the late 1990s), but its unique docking station allowed it to run autonomously much longer than the competition. This gave it the ability to vacuum floors and deposit its dust into a reservoir located on the dock, much like the robots you’ll find on store shelves today.

Modern robot vacuums can now mop and vacuum and clean themselves after each use. But being able to carry out just one of those tasks more than two decades ago was a huge achievement. Toss in contact sensors to move around rooms without manual intervention, the ability to adjust its power based on the task at hand, and enough horsepower to climb over small obstacles, and you’ve got an impressive retro robot vacuum.

Despite its age, the RC 3000 still strikes an imposing image. Unlike the muted white and black designs of today, it boasts a gregarious yellow-and-black color palette that immediately catches your eye. Even in a room filled with dozens of innovative electronics, it’ll quickly steal your attention.

Karcher’s modern catalog of robot vacuums isn’t quite up to par with the competition, but if it decides to make a comeback, we’d love for it to keep the design of its iconic RC 3000.

IFA 2024 runs from September 6 through September 10. We’ll be covering all the smart home reveals as they happen, so check back in the coming days for all the latest news.

The Narwal Freo X Plus is an entry-level robot vacuum loaded with premium features
The Freo X Plus vacuuming pet hair.

Narwal launched the Freo X Ultra earlier this year, and we found it to be an exceptional robot vacuum and mop combo -- though its $1,400 price tag made it a luxury item for most shoppers. Thankfully, many of the Freo X Ultra's best features can be found on the newly launched Narwal Freo X Plus, which offers an affordable alternative to the flagship vacuum and mop combo.

The Freo X Plus should be much more appealing to frugal shoppers, as it clocks in at just $400. That's a full $1,000 cheaper than the Ultra, yet it still holds up to seven weeks of dust, can lift its mopping plate when traveling on carpet, and produces up to 7,800 Pa of suction to pull out dirt and debris from your carpets. It can even apply 6 Newton units of downward pressure while mopping, allowing it to tackle tough stains with ease.

iRobot launches affordable robot vacuum and mop combo that costs just $275
The iRobot Roomba Combo Essential mopping a floor.

iRobot is one of the most popular manufacturers of robot vacuums, but much of its lineup is locked behind hefty price tags. One of our favorite robot vacuums, the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+, for example, clocks in at $1,400 -- making it a pricey proposition for most households. That's changing today, however, as the brand has officially launched the Roomba Combo Essential, which costs just $250 and offers many of the same features found in its expensive siblings.

The Roomba Combo Essential Robot is a robot vacuum and mop that's billed as an upgrade to the old Roomba 600 Series. It uses a V-shaped roller brush to minimize tangles while vacuuming, offers three different suction levels for customized performance, and uses an edge sweeping brush to better clean baseboards and crevices. It's a similar story for mopping, as you can choose between three different water levels for cleaning hard floors.

Narwal’s Freo X Ultra honors reliable, maintenance-free cleaning for 7 weeks
Narwal Freo X Ultra smart robotic vacuum with family

Why does anyone buy a smart robotic vacuum? For two primary reasons: To have a spotless home and to achieve that with minimal effort. But you'd be surprised how many modern vacuums don't offer such a thing, or worse yet, require constant attention. That's not the case with Narwal's Freo X Ultra, a brilliant smart robotic vacuum that requires minimal maintenance. Its self-contained dust processing and storage allows for up to seven weeks of continuous use without emptying any dustbins. Plus, the truly tangle-free experience thanks to a certified zero hair tangling brush means it won't get trapped, clogged, or stuck because of any debris. It cleans right up to the edge of any wall or space, with 8,200 Pascals of suction power, and even has a built-in mop that scrubs away stubborn stains. All of this is possible with ultimate convenience and no hassles or messes. Sounds promising, indeed. Even better, from March 6 until March 12, you can use code NARWALNEW at checkout to get $200 off.
