MySpace Helps Track Down Sex Offenders

MySpace Helps Track Down Sex Offenders

While MySpace is often cited as a danger for children on the Internet, the site recently helped put six sex offenders in jail for violating the terms of their probation, and another for failing to register as a sex offender. The Texas attorney general’s office made the announcement on Thursday, just one day after authorities announced they had snagged two other alleged computer criminals.

"Texans will not tolerate criminals who prey on our children," Attorney General Abbott said in a statement. "These convicted sex predators established online identities on a Web site that is popular with teenagers and children. The Cyber Crimes Unit will continue its aggressive crackdown on sex predators who threaten our kids."

The profiles of the men in question had already been removed from MySpace due to an internal program. Sentinel Safe Tech Holdings Corp. performed the work of building a database of sex offender registry on MySpace and removing them from the site. Arrests were made after MySpace cooperated with authorities by handing over details.

Oddly enough, video of the arrests is actually available on the Texas attorney general’s Web site.
