New Year’s Eve Ball Lights to Be Ebayed

If you’ve ever wanted to own one of the light bulbs which traditionally light the New Year’s Eve Ball in New York’s Time Square, now is your chance. Philips, the company behind the bulbs, is auctioning the bulbs off on eBay between Dec. 30 and Jan. 6 as a American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund fundraiser.

The ball lit by several colors of Philips bulbs, including clear, red, blue, green and yellow, along with high-intensity strobe lights. All listed bulbs will be authenticated with a production number etched in the bulb and will be shipped to the winning bidders with an accompanying letter of certification.

This also marks the last year Philips will be using standard bulbs to light the ball. They plan to switch to more advanced and environmentally friendly solid-state LED lights in 2006.

If you're determined to create a truly impressive Halloween lighting setup that borders on obnoxious, Govee has a new set of outdoor smart lights for your consideration. The Govee Outdoor Permanent Lights are now available for $199 for a 50-foot string and $299 for 100 feet.

Govee is employing its usual slew of features for this batch of lights, including RGBIC LEDs which allow for smooth transitions within each light, music sync, and a mobile app rife with customized animation options. These lights should be able to handle cold and hot weather alike, so don't be shy about leaving them out year-round. Govee claims to offer higher watts per bead than anything else available, resulting in 40% greater wall washing effect than competing lights.

Philips unveils new Hue Go lamp, Tap switch, and app upgrades

Philips Hue took the wraps off several new smart lamps and upgrades, including a portable lamp, a new twist on its physical switch, new indoor downlights, and a smattering of other upgrades.

The new Philips Hue Go lamp offers a lot of the same features as the previous generation packed into a new form factor. A wireless charging base lets you grab it and go with minimal fuss. The stem has a grip to help you move it around while a single button cycles through different scenes. The standalone runtime on the lamp is 48 hours. Expect to see this one on store shelves by the end of the summer for $160.
