  • Lightweight construction

Cordless stick vacuums seem to be all the rage nowadays. Companies have been focusing a lot of attention on them because of their strong suction, versatile accessories, and ability to fit into the tightest nook and crannies. The Samsung Jet 90 Complete Cordless Stick Vacuum offers all of those fundamental qualities while taking air quality at home more seriously with a clean station that disposes of all the debris — so dust and allergens aren’t released back into the air after each clean. Do you really need an automatic disposal system for your vacuum? Let’s find out.

Lightweight contender packs a punch

Compared to other stick vacuums I’ve reviewed, the Samsung Jet 90 Complete Cordless Stick Vacuum is one of the leaner-looking options out there. It’s certainly lighter and not as bulky, which is always a good thing, but I’m surprised by how it looks trimmer than the mighty Dyson V11 Torque Drive. Weighing in at 6.17 pounds, it can be easily handled for all sorts of cleaning.

When cleaning floors and carpets, I like how the turbo action brush can be extended to accommodate all individuals — whether they’re tall or short, it can be adjusted properly. With 200 watts of suction power, the Jet 90 does an excellent job of capturing embedded debris and dust that are stuck deep in carpets. I was impressed by the amount of fine dust particles it was able to capture with its 5-layer HEPA filtration system, but you’ll want to set its suction power to max for optimal results. Even though it’s able to pull in hair, I still found some minor tangles with the turbo action brush.

It has enough punch to suck up deeply embedded particles from carpets.

For hardwoods and tiles, the included soft brush has a gentle finish that won’t scratch floors. It’s also especially practical for picking up kitty litter from the floor, as it does a good job of containing the litter in place as the brush goes over it.

It may appear quaint, but the 0.8-liter dustbin of the Samsung Jet 90 Complete Cordless Stick Vacuum is on the bigger side compared to its rivals — the Dyson V11 Torque Drive and LG CordZero A9 have 0.75L and 0.39L dustbins, respectively.

Overall, it’s an excellent all-around performer that can tackle just about anything. Sure, its suction isn’t as strong as the Dyson V11 Torque Drive’s, but it has enough punch to suck up deeply embedded particles from carpets.

Ingeniously designed accessories

Samsung includes an assortment of accessories with the Jet 90, including the turbo action brush, soft brush, crevice tool, brush tool, and a combination tool that’s ideal for furniture. There’s a level of ingenuity evident in the design of these accessories because some of them can be articulated beyond their default actions. For example, you can get a little more extension with the crevice tool — so that even more suction is applied.

Even better is that there’s a charging base station included with the package. We’re seeing more and more cordless stick vacuums offering this, but it’s made better here because it also houses some of the accessories. There is room for only two accessories to hang from the base station,  however, leaving three that need to be placed elsewhere (you can keep one of the brushes attached to the vacuum, obviously).

Once cradled into place, though, it’ll recharge the 2850 mA battery. That battery is rated for 60 minutes with a full charge, which is just about what I clocked while using the vacuum. However, it takes a whopping 3.5 hours to recharge. There’s actually another dock that can charge a spare battery, but you would have to purchase one separately for

$150

.

Do you really need an auto-disposal system?

Auto-disposal systems are increasingly common among robot vacs. It just makes sense given that they’re autonomous and clean on their own, which bodes well for us because the whole cleaning process means very little to zero interaction from us humans. Now, it looks like the trend may be coming to cordless vacs as well.

The Samsung Jet 90 is the first cordless vacuum I’ve tested to offer an optional automatic disposal system, the Samsung Clean Station. It can be mistaken for a charging base of some kind, but it features a 5-layer HEPA filtration system that sucks up the contents of the Jet 90’s dustbin in a way that it prevents dirt and debris from going back into the home. It can be tricky to empty a dustbin over a trash bin.

With the Samsung Clean Station, however, you simply remove the dustbin from the vacuum and place it into the compartment — and with a push of a button, it sucks in the contents. It’s as simple as that.

Is this really necessary, though? I honestly think not, especially given that it’ll set you back another $199 to pick up the Samsung Clean Station. You could just be more careful about emptying the vacuum’s dustbin. But for those who are particular or more susceptible to dust, it’s an option to consider.

Our take

The Samsung Jet 90 Complete Cordless Stick Vacuum is an excellent model that hits the necessary marks in making it an effective cleanup tool for the home. It’s on the pricey side at $500, but it’s actually still less than the comparable Dyson V11 Torque Drive ($600) and LG CordZero A9 ($550). On its own, you get a solid cordless vacuum that’s easy to maneuver, gobbles up debris, and comes with intelligently designed accessories and base station.

How long will it last?

It’s constructed mainly out of tough plastic, which contributes to its lightweight feel. It feels well-made and solid, so it should hold up for a long period of time. Samsung does offer a  1-year limited warranty that covers parts and labor due to defects.

Is there a better alternative?

If suction power is your preference, the Dyson V11 Torque Drive does a better job of really getting a deep clean on carpets — plus, the brush isn’t prone to hair getting tangled in there. You’ll pay more, but its suction performance is hard to beat. Alternatively, the LG CordZero A9 offers something similar with its package, while throwing in a spare battery to give users a longer cleaning time.

Should you buy it?

Yes, you’ll be astounded by the fine dust particles it’s able to suck up and contain.
