Social Network Site For Over 50s

What’s sauce for the goose can be sauce for the gander, it seems. After all, social networking sites have been aimed at the young since they began, so why not one geared for a people of…a certain age?   That’s the thinking at Saga, the British association for those over 50. They’ve launched Saga Zone, where member can post profiles on their pages, blog, messages each other and post on forums.   Begun in a trial four months ago, the site now has 13,000 members, and has just come out of beta, with the oldest member to date being 87. Some members had come together through the site to arrange a vacation as a group, bringing real life to a virtual community.   It’s a natural progression, given that older adults are not only spending more time online (one study shows over 50s responsible for 30% of all time spent online, according to the BBC), but also utilizing the resources of the Internet more.   Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga Group, said:   "The internet is a place where the over 50s are thriving. Saga Zone is a place where they can mingle and chat about issues important to them, be they amusing or serious."
