Acer Elbows into Smartphone Market

Not content with its lines of laptops, desktops, netbooks, servers, monitors, TVs, projectors, digital photo frames and even handhelds, Acer has announced plans to cut into the smartphone business. Confirming long-held rumors, the company sent out media invites on Wednesday to the debut of its first smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The move comes after Acer bought up Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer E-Ten early last year, which produces the Glofiish line of phones. Hints from Acer president Gianfranco Lanci indicate the phone will likely be based on Windows Mobile, but it’s unlikely to be a rebadged Glofiish, given the long delay between the company’s acquisition and the mystery phone’s launch.

The official announcement will come on the first day of MWC on Feb. 16, when Lanci delivers a presentation at 7 p.m.

Apple has almost 50% of the global refurbished smartphone market

Apple captured about half of the global refurbished smartphone market in 2022, followed by Samsung, which shared 26% of sales, according to data from research firm Counterpoint.

The findings also revealed that refurbished smartphone shipments grew 5% globally year on year. That’s in notable contrast to shipments of new phones, which saw an 11.3% decline in 2022, according to research firm IDC.

It's fun to imagine what technological breakthrough will eventually replace our smartphones. Will it be AR headsets? Microchips in our brain? Something else entirely? Well, at least according to one company, it may be a small, screenless wearable you carry around in your shirt pocket.

On April 21, leaked footage from an upcoming TED talk revealed photos and videos of the upcoming wearable from Humane — a tech startup led by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno. The full TED talk demoing the Humane wearable is expected to go live on April 22, but even from the early bits we've seen so far, it looks like a fascinating (and strange) alternative to the smartphone.
