Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is now available in white

If the Kindle Oasis wasn’t enough to tickle your nose, Amazon is out with a refreshed Kindle that’s thinner and lighter than ever before.

The Kindle is the basic model of the popular e-reader line. This year’s model weighs just 5.7 ounces — which means it’s 16 percent lighter, but also 11 percent thinner than the previous model. There’s not much else that has changed in design, but internally you’ll find double the RAM — bringing it up to 512MB. The new model also lets you take and share notes — you can share highlighted sections and quotes to your social media networks. It also features Bluetooth audio which can boost accessibility with VoiceView — a tool that reads out everything on your screen.

That’s not the only news Amazon is serving up — the 2015 Kindle Paperwhite is also now available in white. It seems like a no-brainer, and it’s surprising that Paperwhite wasn’t previously offered in, well, the color of paper.

The new Kindle comes at the same price as its predecessor — $80, and of course it’s available for pre-order now on Amazon. For a refresher — the Kindle doesn’t have a built-in light, comes packed with 4GB of storage, and features a 6-inch display. The device ships out on July 7.

Amazon recently unveiled its 2016 flagship Kindle model — the Oasis. While it wasn’t waterproof like the name may suggest, it featured an all new design and form factor, and a leather battery cover. We liked it, and you can read more of our thorough review here.

How the Kindle Scribe quietly became my favorite gadget of 2022
Amazon Kindle Scribe laying on a desk.

The mobile tech space is — for the most part — a very predictable beast. You can all but guarantee that Samsung launches a new Galaxy S smartphone at the beginning of the year, Google holds its I/O conference in May, Apple announces the latest version of iOS in June, there may be a new Z Fold in August or September, new iPhones come out in the fall, and so on.

But no matter how predictable the market becomes, that doesn't mean there aren't any surprises along the way. The Nothing Phone 1 is unlike any other smartphone on the market today, the Apple Watch Ultra created a whole new segment of Apple Watch, and the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro was the camera shocker of the year. But those aren't the gadgets I left 2022 thinking the most about. Instead, that honor goes to the Amazon Kindle Scribe.

CES 2023: The Lenovo Smart Paper looks like a great Kindle Scribe killer
Menu options on the Lenovo Smart Paper.

At CES 2023 this week, Lenovo announced the new Smart Paper tablet. As the name implies, it's an e-paper tablet that's built to replace your notebook and pen and "smarten" them up. It goes on sale later this year.

All e-ink devices aim to replicate the feel of pulpy paper and polished penmanship as well as they can, and the Lenovo Smart Paper is no exception. Coming with a 10.3-inch display, the Smart Paper is built very much like a notebook. There's an anti-glare touch display, and it comes in at a very wide aspect ratio that's different from typical tablets -- and all of it is housed in a sleek metal chassis.

Why a Kindle Paperwhite is the best $100 you can spend on Cyber Monday
A personal reads on a Kindle Paperwhite while relaxing at campsite.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are prime times throughout the year to get mobile tech at lower-than-usual prices. That means there are ample Cyber Monday phone deals, tablet deals, and smartwatch deals. But those aren't the only mobile gadgets you can buy for cheap. Also available at a discount today is the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.

The Kindle Paperwhite isn't a particularly exciting mobile device, at least not on paper. It isn't a flashy flagship smartphone or a powerful tablet you can use to play CoD: Mobile. Instead, it's a very simple e-reader that's designed for reading e-books and nothing more. But it's because of that simplicity that the Kindle Paperwhite is so damn good — and why it's the best $100 you can spend on a new gadget this Cyber Monday.
