Did you get Android 10 in the dying days of 2019? Here’s every phone that did

We’ve finished our slice of Android Pie and it’s time to chow down on something new. But Google did doing something very different in 2019. It dropped the saccharine-sweet dessert naming scheme and gave Android a rebrand. Android 10 is Google’s newest operating system, and like every major Android release, it’s adding loads of fun new features.

But not every smartphone will be getting the new update, and even if yours is, getting the update can take time. So when can you expect to receive Android 10? We’ve reached out to almost all of the manufacturers we expect to support Android 10, and here’s what they had to say. We’ll be updating this story as we continue to hear back.

Alcatel

Alcatel 3V review

We’ve reached out to Alcatel about its plans for Android 10, but we haven’t heard back yet. Chances are that, while Alcatel will release new phones running Android 10, it won’t be updating many phones, if any, to Android 10. Alcatel’s record with updates isn’t great, and it did little where Android 9.0 Pie updates were concerned. We’ll update you as soon as we hear back from Alcatel.

Asus

Asus is one of the manufacturers involved in the Android 10 beta, so we fully expect a number of Asus phones to get the update. Alongside the usual flagships, Asus’s flagship gaming Asus ROG Phone 2 is a strong bet to receive the update eventually.

The signs are good for Asus aficionados, as Asus released an update for the ZenFone 6 in early November, and followed up with an update for the Asus ZenFone 5Z in late November. Being so fast out of the gate is a good sign, and so it’s not unreasonable to expect other Asus phones to catch up in 2020.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry Key2 LE review
Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

We’re afraid we don’t have strong hopes for Android 10 updates where BlackBerry’s phones are concerned. The BlackBerry KeyOne and Key2 were supposed to be receiving an update to Android 9.0 Pie, but those updates never materialized. Now, unsubstantiated rumors from the BlackBerry Base forum say BlackBerry will only be providing security patches for those devices, and will not be supporting further Android updates. It’s sad news for BlackBerry fans but probably won’t come as a surprise.

Essential

Essential, the (current) one-phone wonder, may have shut down production of its first phone, but it’s apparently still upholding its commitment to major Android updates. The Essential Phone has been present in the Android 10 beta since the beginning, and it has already received an Android 10 update.

Google

Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

No surprises here — Google’s phones are first in line to receive Android 10. Android 9.0 Pie saw the end of support for Nexus devices, so some may have worried the original Google Pixel might lose out on Android 10, after having received two major OS updates. However, the first Pixel was included in the Android 10 beta, and it has received the final build along with the mid-range Pixel 3a and 3a XL.

Honor

Honor didn’t put any devices forward for the Android 10 beta, but we’re still expecting an updated version of Magic UI to hit Honor devices. According to rumors, we can expect the Honor 20, Honor 20 Pro, Honor V20, and the Honor Magic 2 to be first in line to get the update. Honor India has also confirmed on Twitter that the Honor 10 and Honor 8X are expected to receive the Android 10 update. A beta road map confirmed the Honor 20, View 20, and 20 Pro would see beta access in December 2019, and the Honor 9X and 9X Pro were confirmed entry to the beta in early December 2019.

HTC

HTC U12 Life review
Simon Hill/Digital Trends

HTC wasn’t exactly snappy with its Android 9.0 Pie updates, but it did just about manage to sneak a bunch of them over the line before Android 10 released. Still, that doesn’t give us faith where HTC’s updates are concerned. Expect it to confirm which devices it will be updating soon, but until then, we’re going to hesitantly suggest that the same devices that received Android 9.0 Pie will also receive Android 10.

We told you not to expect any updates with any sort of haste, and it appears we were right. By the end of 2019, we have heard precisely zero rumors about any existing HTC devices getting Android 10. Roll on 2020, but don’t hold your breath.

  • HTC U12 Plus
  • HTC U11 Plus
  • HTC U11

Huawei

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

It’s usual for Huawei to take some time delivering major Android updates, purely because of how different EMUI is from stock Android. However, Huawei seems intent on hitting the ground running with Android 10, as the beta version of EMUI 10 (based on Android 10) arrived early in Android 10’s lifespan.

While the full release isn’t confirmed, a road map for beta access for phones has been confirmed by Huawei. The road map lists a number of phones with beta access, and it’s not unfair to assume those phones will eventually get the final Android 10/EMUI 10 release. Interestingly, some of the phones mentioned in the road map still haven’t received Android 9.0 Pie, so Huawei really needs to get its skates on.

The Android 10 update for the Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro, P30, and the Nova 5T has already arrived.

LG

LG V50 ThinQ 5G review
Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

Expect LG to update most of its major flagships from the last few years. The LG G8 ThinQ was in the Android 10 beta program, so it was unsurprising when it turned out to be top of LG’s beta roadmap. Following that beta period, the LG G8 ThinQ was the first to receive the update, followed quickly by the Android One-equipped LG G7 One. Expect the LG V50 ThinQ 5G and the LG V50S ThinQ 5G to follow soon after.

Much like HTC, LG wasn’t the fastest to update its phones to Android 9.0 Pie. The early signs are good for Android 10 though. LG updating well is definitely of paramount importance to certain users, now it’s one of the final manufacturers to rock the headphone jack.

Motorola

Like most manufacturers, we’re expecting Motorola’s most recent devices to receive an update, although we know the Moto E6 definitely won’t. As is becoming a disappointing tradition, the latest Moto E phone will receive no software updates. Two recent entries on the Wi-Fi Alliance website indicate the Motorola One Zoom and Moto Z4 will soon receive the Android 10 update, but we won’t know for sure until it’s confirmed or the updates release.

Motorola has some Android One devices too, and those devices tend to get updates quicker, since they’re based on stock Android. That advantage is showing with the quick release of Android 10 for the Motorola One Power. Expect the other Android One Motorola phones to follow in early 2020.

Nokia

Nokia 9 hands-on review
Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

We knew HMD Global would clarify which Nokia phones would get Android 10, but we weren’t expecting them to do so quite this fast. Mere minutes after the Android 10 announcement, HMD Global was ready with the planned update schedule.

Now, the rollout of Android 10 to Nokia phones has begun. The Nokia 8.1 was the first to receive Android 10, but it wasn’t alone for long. The camera powerhouse the Nokia 9 PureView and the Nokia 7.1 completed Nokia’s 2019 rollouts.

Next in line for updates are the Nokia 7.2, Nokia 6.2, Nokia 7 Plus, and Nokia 6.1 and 6.1 Plus, which are due to receive Android 10 in January 2020.

Seven more Nokia phones, including the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 3.2, and the Nokia 8 Sirocco, are due to receive the update in the first three months of 2020, while the Nokia 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, and the Nokia 1 will be receiving Android 10 in the second quarter of 2020. You can find all the phones due for the upgrade below, as well as estimated dates for delivery.

Due to its use of Android One, Nokia was able to earn itself a reputation of being extremely speedy with updates. Nokia has released a couple of carrier-focused phones since then, but the majority of its releases still use Android One.

Nokia phones that have received Android 10:

  • Nokia 8.1
  • Nokia 9 PureView
  • Nokia 7.1

Nokia phones confirmed to receive Android 10:

  • Nokia 7.2 (January 2020)

OnePlus

OnePlus is extremely well represented in the Android 10 beta, with its three most recent devices — the OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7, and OnePlus 6T — all having access to the beta version of Android 10. The company pushed out an update making Android 10 available through the latest OxygenOS Open Beta shortly after release, and then released Android 10 to the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro in late September 2019. The OnePlus 6 and 6T weren’t far behind, receiving the update in November 2019. The rollout was halted for a short time, but restarted in December 2019.

It has also been confirmed the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G will also be receiving Android 10 — but not until early 2020. Not exactly the super-premium support we expect from super-premium 5G smartphones.

OnePlus has traditionally been quite generous with updates — Android 9.0 Pie was brought to devices as old as the 2016 OnePlus 3. We don’t expect the OnePlus 3 or 3T to get Android 10, but we expect OnePlus to update every device down to the OnePlus 5.

Oppo

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom review
Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

We don’t have much idea of what to expect from Oppo where Android 10 is concerned, but we do know the Oppo Reno is likely to be one of Oppo’s first devices to receive the update when it’s available, as it’s the only Oppo device in the Android 10 beta program.

Oppo is usually quite open about its update plans, but it’s also a little tardy. The company missed multiple self-set deadlines for updating phones to Android 9.0 Pie, and it might be wise to expect that from Oppo again.

Oppo phones expected to receive Android 10:

  • Oppo Reno (beta released)

Realme

Realme X Hands-On
Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

Realme has come out of nowhere to secure itself a spot in the smartphone market, and it also secured the Realme 3 Pro a place in the Android 10 beta as well. For that reason, it’s fair to assume the Realme 3 Pro will receive the Android 10 update. After the release of Android 10, Realme also confirmed which of its phones will get Android 10, with almost every one of its phones getting the update. It has since released a more specific roadmap with even more devices, so check below to see when your Realme phone will be updated.

Realme phones confirmed to receive Android 10:

  • Realme 3 Pro (expected January 2020)
  • Realme XT (expected January 2020)
  • Realme 5 Pro (expected February 2020)
  • Realme X (expected February 2020)
  • Realme X2 Pro (expected March 2020)
  • Realme 3 (expected April 2020)
  • Realme 3i (expected April 2020)
  • Realme 5 (expected May 2020)
  • Realme 5S (expected May 2020)
  • Realme 2 Pro (expected June 2020)
  • Realme C2 (expected Q3 2020)

Samsung

Samsung is nothing if not prolific — and if you don’t believe us, check out the massive list of updated Samsung smartphones in our Android 9.0 Pie update list. Samsung has the resources to update a lot of phones, and as such, it’s usually worth waiting until we hear rumors for specific devices, or when Samsung updates us with a solid list. With that said, the last few years of flagships are likely to be updated. We expect the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 to bow out though; they’ve had their two major OS updates, and Samsung usually cuts off after two.

Samsung has never been fast with updates, thanks to its continued insistence on using its own custom skin on top of Android. One UI is great, but it does take time to make. Samsung has previously pushed major Android updates to phones before the end of the year, with some Android Pie updates landing in December 2018. Happily, that’s becoming a new trend, with Android 10 updates for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 range, Galaxy S10 range, and Galaxy M20 and M30 arriving before the end of 2019.

So what’s next? The Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 range seem hot favorites to get Android 10 next, with both having received a number of beta releases. Will the stable build release before the end of 2019? Unlikely — but an early 2020 release is still good by Samsung’s previous standards.

Samsung phones that have received Android 10:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G (unlocked & Verizon)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus (unlocked & Verizon)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 (unlocked & Verizon)
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S10
  • Samsung Galaxy S10e
  • Samsung Galaxy M30 (in India)
  • Samsung Galaxy M20 (in India)

Samsung phones expected to receive Android 10:

  • Samsung Galaxy Fold
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S9

Sony

Sony Xperia 1 review
Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

We weren’t expecting Sony to be too fast out of the block, but we were expecting it to end 2019 with more than a couple of Android 10 updates under its belt. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be, but it still managed to update the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 in December 2019. Sony has also listed which other Xperia phones would receive the update. We’ve updated our list below to reflect Sony’s expected timetable.

Sony phones that have received Android 10:

  • Sony Xperia 1
  • Sony Xperia 5

Sony phones confirmed to receive Android 10:

  • Sony Xperia 10 (expected early 2020)
  • Sony Xperia 10 Plus (expected early 2020)
  • Sony Xperia XZ3 (expected early 2020)
  • Sony Xperia XZ2 (expected early 2020)
  • Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact (expected early 2020)
  • Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium (expected early 2020)

Vivo

The Android 10 beta is available on three Vivo phones, and, er, they’re the only ones we have a decent idea about at the moment. We’ve reached out to Vivo for a more solid timetable, but we haven’t heard anything back yet. Expect more devices to be confirmed as Android 10 matures.

Vivo phones expected to receive Android 10:

  • Vivo X27
  • Vivo Nex S
  • Vivo Nex A

Xiaomi

Xiaomi Mi 9T
Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

Xiaomi volunteered two of its phones to take part in the Android 10 beta program, and they’re the only two Xiaomi devices we think are likely to get the Android 10 update — in the West, anyway. The Redmi K20 Pro is also part of the Android 10 beta program in China, and it may be that Xiaomi will focus its efforts mostly on the Chinese market to begin with. But we’re confident Xiaomi will push out the updates to the West eventually — and maybe not as slowly as it usually would.

Rumors say the company has confirmed the Xiaomi Mi 9T (otherwise known as the Redmi K20) will be getting Android 10 by October 2020, which isn’t exactly an aspirational goal. Thankfully, Android 10 may be hitting earlier on the Redmi Note 8 Pro, which is apparently expected to arrive soon.

Xiaomi phones expected to receive Android 10:

  • Xiaomi Mi 9
  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G
  • Redmi K20 Pro/Xiaomi Mi 9T
  • Redmi Note 8 Pro

Google has a magical new way for you to control your Android phone
Holding the Google Pixel 8 Pro, showing its Home Screen.

You don’t need your hands to control your Android phone anymore. At Google I/O 2024, Google announced Project Gameface for Android, an incredible new accessibility feature that will let users control their devices with head movements and facial gestures.

There are 52 unique facial gestures supported. These include raising your eyebrow, opening your mouth, glancing in a certain direction, looking up, smiling, and more. Each gesture can be mapped to an action like pulling down the notification shade, going back to the previous app, opening the app drawer, or going back to home. Users can customize facial expressions, gesture sizes, cursor speed, and more.

At Google I/O 2024, Google has shown off a lot of new improvements coming to Android, thanks to Gemini. With Gemini, Android will be aware of the context on the screen in a variety of scenarios, which will make your life a lot easier. At least, according to Google.

Circle to Search, which was first shown off during Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this year, will be getting some new enhancements. Now, Circle to Search will be a great new study buddy for students. Why? Because it will be able to help with homework, like physics and math. You can simply circle a prompt on the screen, and it will give you step-by-step instructions on how to solve it.
