AOL Expands Mobile Offerings

America Online today made two deep forays into the world of mobile communications. One involves AOLMobile.com, a new mobile portal with shopping for plans and services, and the other is an extension of their AOL.com site to allow WAP 2 access.

The new shopping portal, AOL said, is done as part as a business alliance with online wireless services and devices seller inPhonic. AOLMobile.com will allow users to compare and buy the latest mobile phones and cellular service plans.

The WAP 2 extension of AOL.com, meanwhile, will allow the portal’s content and services to be accessed by a wider audience. Features of this mobile phone version include mobile search, news, weather, sports, entertainment, yellow pages, online picture storage access and access to AOL Mail.

“The new AOLMobile.com site is all about personalization and simplification,” said said Rajive Mathur, vice president, AOLMobile.com, America Online, Inc. “We designed it so that our members, registered users and web users alike can easily learn about the phones, services, features and accessories that are available and best suited to meet their needs. It’s also a ‘mobile home base’ where users can easily manage their wireless service accounts.”
