Apple is commemorating the 1969 Stonewall Riots that served as one of the most historical events leading to the gay liberation movements. The Stonewall riots occurred in New York City and are seen as a movement to fight equality for the LGBT community.
Apple wrote the following in the App Store: “Every June, we commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots — a history-making moment in which gay men and women fought back after decades of relentless discrimination. It heralded the beginning of the modern gay rights movement, launching the struggle for public visibility, cultural acceptance, and legal equality that the LGBT community has continued battling for ever since. To celebrate these efforts, we’ve gathered a selection of movies, music, TV shows, apps, and more — all reflecting the broad and diverse spectrum of LGBT pride.”
The featured content highlights movies like Milk and Hedwig and the Angry Inch to TV shows like Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. Music fans can also purchase music by popular artists like Sam Smith, Adam Lambert, Frank Ocean, and Neon Trees
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, announced that he was gay last year, and has spoken out against anti-LGBT legislation. Cook wrote a column in Bloomberg BusinessWeek publicly acknowledging that he is gay. Tim Cook wrote, “While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.”
Tim Cook was also featured on Alabama’s anti-discrimination bill. It was just last year, the company participated in the San Francisco Pride Parade, posting a video on its YouTube channel.
