Apple and Samsung are the most valuable global brands of 2015

Samsung’s strong showing at Mobile World Congress 2015 won the company plenty of buzz, thanks to the debut of its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones. It also ratcheted up favorable and critical comparisons with Apple’s iPhone 6, which may be more fitting than ever in light of a recent report from a brand valuation firm pegging these two companies as the two most valuable brands in the world.

Apple is far and away the most valuable global brand of 2015, according to report from Brand Finance. The U.S. brand behind the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is worth a record $128 billion using Brand Finance’s formula (Brand Strength Index x brand “royalty rate” x brand revenues). This is up 23 percent from its $105 billion valuation in 2014.

“That value is huge not just in its own terms but also as a proportion of Apple’s record-breaking corporate valuation,” said David Haigh, CEO of Brand Finance. “It goes to show how valuable brands are as business assets and how important it is to manage them well.”

While it’s not quite nipping at Apple’s heels, South Korea-based Samsung retained its No. 2 spot on the list with a brand value of $82 billion, up 4 percent from its $79 billion valuation last year.

Google, Microsoft and Verizon rounded out the top five spots on the Brand Finance Global 500 for 2015.

Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster probably doesn’t think much of this report. In a recent interview, McMaster predicted diminishing market shares for Apple and Samsung over the next 3-5 years, thanks to low-budget devices gaining steam.

“The tier-one OEMs like Samsung are going to be the next generation of Nokias in the next five years,” said McMaster. “They’re going to be slaughtered. We think long term Apple itself will have problems because they’re just not good at competing at the low end.”

Apple Intelligence features are finally available for everyone
Apple Intelligence & Siri screen on an iPhone 16 Pro

Apple has begun rolling out Apple Intelligence to those with eligible iPhones through the latest iOS 18.1 update. Apple Intelligence was originally shown off during WWDC 2024 in June and has been available to those on the developer and public betas. However, as of today, iOS 18.1 is available to everyone, though Apple Intelligence is only available for the iPhone 15 Pro models and the entire iPhone 16 lineup.

With iOS 18.1, those users can now access several Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, a more natural and capable Siri, summarize notifications, a smarter Photos app, and priority messages in Mail. Be aware that these are just a fraction of Apple Intelligence features — there are even more AI tools coming in iOS 18.2, which is currently in beta.

We just got an early tease for Samsung’s next folding phones
Samsung Galaxy AI on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung, like most other phone manufacturers, sticks to a pretty predictable schedule: a new numbered iteration per model per year. That's why we weren't surprised to hear that a Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 were slated for 2025, but we now have confirmation. Their codenames just leaked, and we also learned of an unexpected third model.

GalaxyClub broke the news after receiving information from Samsung. According to the site, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is code-named B7, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is code-named Q7. There's also a third model with the code name Q7M, but it's not clear what this entry actually is. Since it bears a derivative code name, this handset is likely a spinoff of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — though we don't know what that entails.

If you aren’t already using the Apple Sports app, you need to
The Apple Sports app running on an iPhone 16.

Friends, we are well into the best time of the year: football season. The Lions are off to an incredible start, the Vikings look dangerously good, and I'm continually amazed by how bad the Browns are.

The 2024 season has been a lot of fun. Not only have the games been entertaining, but I've also had a much better time following the latest plays and scores on my phone. After begrudgingly using the ESPN app last year and the year before, I decided to go all-in on Apple Sports this year — and I couldn't be happier. If you have an iPhone and aren't already using Apple Sports, this is your reminder that you absolutely need to.
