Apple Launches iOS 4 via iTunes

While the truest of Apple fans are holding out for the imminent release of the iPhone 4 on Thursday, those of you looking to breathe new life into your old iPhone or iPod Touch can do it immediately with iOS4. Apple has officially began rolling the software update out today via iTunes.

Check out our iOS 4 primer for an outline of all the most impressive new features, including multitasking, and folders for apps. Keep in mind that only iPhone 3G and 3GS owners, along with iPod Touch 2G/3G owners, can take advantage of the update, and only 3GS owners will be able to multitask.

When you’re ready to download, make sure you have iTunes 9.2, hook up your device, and Apple should detect the update and start downloading it immediately. If you’re using a jailbroken device, keep in mind that the update will nix that capability momentarily, but the iPhone Dev Team has already made quick work of jailbreaking iOS 4 with redsn0w. Walyou has a great explanation of iOS 4 jailbreaking procedures.
