Apple Maps getting better: Improvements quietly rolled out for locations around the world

vancouverThe furor over the mess that was Apple Maps has long since died down, possibly because everyone’s using Google Maps instead.

There are those, however, that dare to tap on the Apple Maps icon on their iPhone to see how it’s shaping up, and the good news appears to be that shaping up it is.

For example, according to The Loop, locations in Japan have been shown some serious love just recently, with lots of new 3D buildings in the capital to gawk at (including Tokyo Station, the Imperial Palace, and Tokyo Tower), new toll road notifications added and improvements to pronunciation of roads during turn-by-turn navigation included.

Icons and labels for freeways have been updated too, as have those for transit stations and subway lines.

The Cupertino company has also rolled out new data for plenty of other locations, with flyover imagery now showing for US cities such as Baltimore, MD; Cleveland, OH; and Albany NY, as well as for places like Vancouver, Canada; Glasgow, Scotland; and Cologne, Germany.

On top of that, expanded flyover coverage has appeared for Boston, MA; Portland, OR; Madrid, Spain; and London, England, among a long list of other places.

The maps team sure has been busy – new data for one of Apple’s most important markets, China, has also been rolled out, while globally it’s been gradually adding information for businesses such as Apple stores (of course), movie theaters, restaurants, airports and transit stops.

Getting better

When Maps first launched in September 2012 – replacing Google Maps on iDevices – it was panned by many users for mislabeling locations and lacking detailed information. The outcry forced Apple boss Tim Cook to issue a letter of apology, which even included suggestions for other map apps to use while it got its own in order.

Meanwhile, an all-new Google Maps app hit the iTunes store in December, with iPhone owners wasting little time in downloading it to their handset.

To instill confidence in iDevice owners still wary of Apple Maps and to persuade them to give it another go, Apple would do well to have a special page on its site giving some details on how its work on improving the software is progressing. It could let users know which areas have been updated with what information, and outline its upcoming plans for the app.

If you’ve tried using it lately, what are your experiences? Or are you continuing to go with Google’s offering instead?

Apple rolls out another promised AirTag safety update
Person holding an Apple AirTag.

Apple has finally rolled out a promised update to its AirTag tracker that allows AirTags to chime with louder tones when separated from their owner's iPhone or other Apple device. The company had promised this as part of a package of updates in February, and the first such feature is rolling out.

"Tuning the unwanted tracking sound to more easily locate an unknown AirTag," Apple notes in the changelog for version 1.0.301. Alongside these changes, Apple has worked on other improvements to make AirTags less attractive as a stalking tool. The company has rolled out a new Tracker Detect app for Android users, as well as promised to increase precision in tracking unknown AirTags.

Apple Maps brings major update to Canadian cities
An iPhone 13 in the hands of a user.

Apple Maps ushered in new, detailed 3D city maps with the release of iOS 15 and now Canada's biggest cities have been added to the feature. Apple device users are able to view Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver in more detail than ever before using Apple Maps, according to an announcement made by Apple. The update provides much more precise environmental information as the app shows individual buildings and landmarks, giving users the ability to truly make sense of their surroundings.

When the feature debuted in a handful of American and English cities, users were impressed with the level of detail in each map. But the number of cities available was a little disappointing to anyone outside of the U.S. and London, so bringing detailed 3D maps to another country is an exciting development for the tech.

Google Maps is getting improved Live View navigation, more detailed map data

Google is making Maps even more helpful than it already is. At Google I/O 2021, the company announced a series of updates to Google Maps that will make it more helpful in day-to-day life, and improve features like the augmented reality (AR) view that Google launched in Maps last year.

Perhaps the most notable change to Maps is that Google is adding more detail in several places. For example, Google Maps will now show users where things like crosswalks, street signs, and intersection markers are straight from the normal map view. As noted by Google at the event, this could be very helpful for parents with strollers, those in a wheelchair, or those who just want to plan their exact walk. The more detailed view was actually already announced by Google in August, but is now more rolling out to 50 more cities around the world.
