Apple and Austrailian banks continue to battle over NFC technology

The battle down under over Apple Pay is raging on and it looks like Apple is ready to fight to the death. In its latest submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the Cupertino, California-based tech giant claims that a group of Australia’s largest banks is looking to “delay or even block” the expansion of Apple Pay at the expense of customers and other card issuers who might be able to use Apple’s technology “as a means of securing a digital presence in competition with the big banks.”

For months, Apple has been arguing against the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation, and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank over whether or not these large banks can access the near field communication (NFC) antenna. In essence, these banks want to place their own digital wallets on iOS, for which they would need to use the iPhone’s NFC antenna. Apple, however, is saying no.

According to its most recent filing with the ACCC, Apple says that the banks are looking to avoid paying fees in order to use the technology. Indeed, the tech giant claims, these four financial institutions want to be “allowed to continue to free-ride on the significant investments’’ Apple has made.

The banks have already shot back at this charge, calling Apple’s assertions “incorrect and unsupported.” In a statement, the banks noted, “The application has never been about preventing Apple Pay from coming to Australia or reducing competition between wallets.” Rather, they continued, “It has always been about providing real choice and real competition for consumers and facilitating innovation and investment in the digital wallet functionality available to Australians.”

A full formal response from the banks will be filed later this week and the ultimate conclusion to this battle royale has yet to be determined.

After bouncing around California courts for nearly a decade, a California federal judge has finally given the green light to Apple’s $30 million settlement in a lawsuit that accused it of failing to pay thousands of its retail workers for the time taken up by security checks after their official working hours ended.

Apple agreed to the settlement last year, and on Monday U.S. District Judge William Alsup signed off on it.

Apple Maps enhances road trips with multistop routing, transit fares

Amid a barrage of updates to iOS 16's lock screen, Apple Pay, and more, Apple also used its WWDC 2022 keynote to unveil several changes to Apple Maps. While Apple Maps has long been the butt of many jokes, Apple's mapping application is poised to get a few key features this year, including multistop routing, new transit information, and more detailed maps in more cities and countries.
Multistop routing
Multistop routing is the highlight of this year's Maps update, and it's bound to be the most useful for folks. With this update, Maps users can create a route with up to 15 stops on the way to their final destination. Planning a big road trip and want to schedule a few stops at gas stations or restaurants along the way? Multistop routing lets you do that. You can create multistop routes directly on your iPhone or on your Mac and send them to your iPhone when you're ready to hit the road.

New transit features
Another standout feature is how Apple Maps is improving transit information. While traveling or planning your route, Apple Maps will show you any upcoming fares and how much they'll cost — ensuring there are no surprise costs along the way. But Apple Maps doesn't stop there. If you have a transit card saved in Apple Pay (which was also just updated at WWDC 2022), Apple Maps will show its remaining balance and alert you if it needs additional funds.
Better maps for more users
Beyond those functional changes, Apple Maps is also getting a few significant visual improvements. Developers can use the MapKit API to integrate enhanced visuals in select cities. This includes high-resolution renders for homes on Zillow, and Bird making its bikes and scooters more easily visible.

Apple Pay Later is coming to Apple Wallet for more flexible spending

At WWDC 2022, Apple showed off some significant updates and changes coming to Apple Wallet with the launch of iOS 16. The standout feature for Apple Pay with iOS 16 is Apple Pay Later. As the name implies, Apple Pay Later will let you make Apple Pay purchases that you pay later on — more specifically, through payments spread out over a few weeks. Apple Pay Later will be available anywhere that Apple Pay works. More importantly, it lets you make said payments with 0 percent interest and no additional fees. If you use Apple Pay and are trying to plan a big purchase, Apple Pay Later could be a useful feature to have.

Apple also provided an update on its rollout of digital IDs in Apple Wallet. Following Wallet's integration with state driver's licenses in Arizona and Colorado, the company expects 11 more states to follow suit. Currently, the states working on integrating Apple Wallet as a legitimate form of ID are already incorporating it into Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checks at select airports.
