Apple’s $20 million tech company buy hints at even better iPhone cameras in the future

Starting with the iPhone 3GS, Apple has continually improved on its camera technology with every iteration of the iPhone. Despite only shooting 8-megapixel pictures, the cameras on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are widely regarded as excellent. Even so, Apple continues to improve its cameras, proven by its latest acquisition of a company called LinX.

What does this mean for the future of Apple’s cameras? “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” Apple told the The Wall Street Journal. Not very helpful, but we can still speculate.

LinX is an Israel-based camera technology company that builds “miniature multi-aperture cameras designed for mobile devices.” The company also builds cameras for tablets and ultrabooks, hinting that Apple looks to not only improve the camera infrastructure in the iPhone, but also in its line of iPad and Mac products.

On its website, LinX says it is able to build cameras that can fit in the body of a typical smartphone, yet offer DSLR-like performance. The company’s cameras also collects depth information of the scene, a technique introduced on several smartphones recently, including the HTC One M8.

Apple purchased LinX for approximately $20 million, which shows that, as previously mentioned, Apple looks to up its camera game in the near future. LinX’s camera technologies could allow Apple products with cameras to have better low-light performance and improved light sensitivity. This line of thinking would fit well, given rumors that Apple’s next flagship could include a dual-lens DSLR-quality camera.

Journal app for iOS 17.

Apple is adding a new first-party app called Journal with the introduction of iOS 17, the company announced today during WWDC 2023. Journal is, as its name simply states, a new place for iPhone users to keep track of their daily activities, log their emotional health, and jot down anything else that they want to write about.

Apple has continued to lean into its first-party health and wellness iOS apps with things like Fitness, Sleep, and Breathe, and now Journal will be joining their ranks as the company's first attempt at an app that focuses on mental well-being.

5 things the iPhone 15 Pro Max needs to fix before I’ll buy it
iPhone 14 Pro Max in hand.

I’ve been using the top-of-the-line big iPhone for two years now. I shifted to the iPhone 13 Pro Max due to its amazing battery life – which inspired my favorite phone of 2022 article. I tried getting back to the non-Max iPhone 14 Pro, but I couldn’t stay long due to the weak battery life. Since then, I've shifted to the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

After using the Pro Max iPhones for over 18 months, here’s what I think the next big Pro iPhone — the iPhone 15 Pro Max — must improve on to deserve the best phone of the year tag again.

Let’s be clear, Apple — it’s time to make a transparent iPhone
Deep Purple iPhone 14 Pro with Beats Studio Buds+ in Transparent

Apple has released a new product that's gotten a lot of attention because of an awesome new color option. No, it’s not an iPhone, iPad, or even an Apple Watch. Heck, it’s not even the AirPods Pro 2. So, what am I talking about?

Apple acquired Beats by Dre in 2014, and this week, Beats dropped the new Beats Studio Buds+, which are pretty similar to the AirPods Pro 2, but cost less dough. And they come in one of the coolest colors I’ve seen in a long time: transparent.
