Archos announces three new quad-core Platinum Android tablets, starting at $200

Archos 97b Platinum Full

For all its noise just before the IFA tech show last month, Archos did a good job at not really announcing very much. Since then, we’ve heard a little more about the Gamepad 2, but up until today, its other new hardware remained elusive. That’s now all changed with the announcement of three new Platinum series Android tablets, the 97b Platinum HD, the the 101 Platinum, and the 80b Platinum.

So, Archos hasn’t altered its ridiculous naming system, but thankfully, it’s much easier to distinguish between them than the name suggests, as the primary difference is in the screen. The smallest of the three is the 80b Platinum (seen below), which has an 8-inch screen with a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution. Next is the 97b Platinum HD, which you can see in the main picture, and is equipped with a 9.7-inch display boasting an impressive 2048 x 1536 resolution. FInally, the 101 Platinum has a 10.1-inch screen and a more traditional 1280 x 800 resolution.

Archos 80b PlatinumAll three use an unnamed quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor with a clock speed of 1.6GHz, and except for the 80b Platinum each has 2GB of RAM. The 80b makes do with 1GB. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is the operating system across the board, and all have 8GB of internal storage, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, and a mini HDMI out. The high-end 97b Platinum HD gets a 2-megapixel camera on both the front and rear of the tablet, while the other two have a 2-megapixel camera on the rear and a basic VGA video call cam above the screen. Just to confuse everyone, the mid-level 101 Platinum is the only one to have GPS.

As for the price, the 80b Platinum is $200, the 101 Platinum is $270, and the top-of-the-range 97b Platinum HD is $300. The new tablets will be on sale during October, and are already listed on Archos’ website.

I record interviews for work. These are my favorite free recorder apps

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet just got its first big discount and it’s worth a look
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
