AT&T Unveils New Logo, Cingular Plans

With the final regulatory hurdles cleared on Friday for the merger of telecom titans SBC and AT&T, a new logo today was unveiled as were confirmed plans to rename the Cingular Wireless brand name to the well known AT&T label.

The new AT&T is the largest U.S. provider of high-speed DSL Internet services and local and long-distance voice services and the No. 1 provider of data services to the Fortune 1000, said the new company. The new AT&T owns 60 percent of Cingular Wireless, which is the largest wireless services provider. As was confirmed by AT&T chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre to the newspaper USA TODAY, Cingular will be sold under the majority holder’s new name.

As for the new logo, said AT&T, “the new globe is three-dimensional, representing the expanding breadth and depth of services that the new AT&T family of companies provides to customers, as well as its global presence. Transparency was added to the globe to represent clarity and vision. Lowercase type is now used for the “AT&T” characters because it projects a more welcoming and accessible image. The core of the new logo remains blue because both the SBC and AT&T brands are strongly associated with that color. The overall design more accurately represents the company that is leading the industry in delivering best-in-class services to consumers and business professionals.”

Customer bills will include the new AT&T logo on envelopes beginning in December and on actual bill statements beginning in February 2006.

I lost my iPhone on a dream vacation — and it wasn’t a nightmare
Photo of Spain.

Our trip to Spain and Morocco, which my wife, Julie, had meticulously planned for 15 months, started off rather inauspiciously on June 25. After arriving in Chicago from Portland, Oregon, we learned that our connecting flight to Newark, New Jersey, had been canceled due to weather concerns. As we waited in line for two-and-a-half hours to talk to a United Airlines agent, we were told via text by a customer service rep that we might be stuck in the Windy City for two days.

A 30-year Spanish teacher, Julie was on the verge of fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting Spain. Now, several activities were in danger of being erased from her bucket list as her worst fears about the trip were being realized. When we finally made it to the service desk, our hope was all but snuffed out. We explained the situation to the agent, who spent several minutes looking at his computer wordlessly. He eventually looked up and said: "I can you get out on a flight tonight."

I wore a $2,750 smartwatch and I didn’t want to take it off
The Tag Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Bright Black Edition on a person's wrist.

Yes, the Tag Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Bright Black smartwatch costs $2,750, and if I had that kind of cash hanging about, I wouldn't hesitate to splurge on it. Madness, you may be saying, as some of the best smartwatches you can buy cost less than $400.

But the Tag Heuer is special, where others simply are not, and an upgrade to Wear OS 3 has really helped emphasize the sheer quality of this smartwatch. Let me try and explain why the expensive Tag Heuer smartwatch is still worth buying.
