AT&T now selling the Fire Phone for $1 on-contract, headed to Europe this month

Only a month and a half after it was first available for AT&T, Amazon announced that the Fire Phone has dropped to just $1 on-contract, down from the $200 the handset originally asked for.

While the price drop might make people see shades of the HTC First, Amazon is trying to put a positive spin on the price drop. “Fire is now 99 cents with a two-year contract, plus customers get one full year of Prime included,” said Amazon Devices vice president Ian Freed. “With access to all of the Prime content, Mayday, 32GB of memory and free unlimited cloud storage for photos, plus the exclusive Dynamic Perspective and Firefly features, Fire is another example of the value Amazon delivers to customers.”

Whether the price drop is a blessing or an omen depends on how you look at this. On one hand, the $1 on-contract price is sure to attract would-be buyers. On the other hand, the price drop could be a sign of poor sales, which ComScore and Chitika both infer from their data figures.

In related news, Amazon also announced that the Fire Phone will make its way to the U.K. and Germany on September 30. O2 will carry the phone in the United Kingdom, while Deutsche Telekom will do the same in Germany.

The Nothing Phone 1 has finally launched in the U.S. — kind of

The Nothing Phone 1 launched globally last year with vague promises of a future U.S. release, but now Nothing fans don't have to wait any longer for the smartphone to make its way stateside. Soft-launching through a "Beta Membership," the Nothing Phone 1 is finally available for Americans who are willing to be a part of Nothing's test program before it officially launches with retailers later in 2023.

While it's certainly exciting for the Nothing Phone 1 to be making its way to the U.S., the release and branding of the membership program are a little odd. It gives fans the opportunity to try out the phone and test Nothing OS 1.5, which is based on Android 13 and represents a major update from Nothing OS 1.0's Android 12 foundation. If you want in, you need to pay $299.

For a long time, Apple’s iPhone lineup started at 64GB storage and capped out at 512GB. This stopped with the iPhone 13 series, with the base model iPhone 13 starting with 128GB, and the iPhone 13 Pro models even going up to 1TB. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models continue this tradition. While Digital Trends’ own Mobile editor, Joe Maring, stated that most people could get by with just 128GB storage on their iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, I’m here thinking absolutely not!

When Apple began offering 1TB of storage with the iPhone 13 Pro, that’s what I sprung for — and I’m going to continue getting 1TB until Apple brings it up to 2TB. Here’s why.
