Casio adds Bluetooth and solar to the hugely popular GA-2100

Don’t brush the new G-Shock GA-B2100 aside as just a collection of new colors, as this is a major update to  the highly popular octagonal GA-2100 watch. Casio has added desirable tech in the form of Bluetooth connectivity and solar charging to give it high-tech appeal, and we predict that’s going to put this watch on a lot of wrists.

The Bluetooth connectivity enables the watch to sync with the Casio Watches app, where adjusting the time happens automatically and you can set alarms and timers too. It’s also simple to add a location for the world time, plus there’s a phone finder feature too. While the GA-B2100 isn’t going to challenge the Apple Watch for functionality, it does make using simple features easier and faster.

Casio’s Tough Solar feature is very welcome. Despite the Bluetooth connection, you don’t have to plug the watch in to a charger, as the solar cells on the dial collect enough energy to power it. When it’s fully charged, the watch will last for many months even if it stays in complete darkness. With normal use, you won’t have to worry about the battery at all.

Even with the addition of the new technology ,the GA-B2100 retains the compact dimensions that make the non-Bluetooth version so wearable. The 48.5mm case is 11.9mm thick, so it easily fits under a shirt cuff, and it’s not so massive that it overpowers small wrists. At 52 grams, it’s lightweight too. The design hasn’t changed either, with the octagonal shape earning the GA-2100 the nickname of CasiOak due to its passing similarity to the Audemars Piquet Royal Oak watches.

Utilizing Casio’s Carbon Core Guard structure — which uses carbon fiber to reinforce the resin case — the GA-B2100 is shock resistant and water resistant to 200 meters. There are five color choices in the range, starting with the black-on-black and black-on-gray models, and continuing with the more eye-catching yellow, green, and blue models. These all recall the tones used on the very first G-Shock DW-5600 watches released in the late 1980s.

The watch has been announced by Casio, but price and availability details for the U.S. have not been confirmed yet. In the U.K. the watch will be released on May 2 and cost 130 British pounds, or about $170 for all but the yellow version, which costs 140 pounds, which converts to about $184.

The bezel material on Casio’s stunning MTG-B2000XMG will leave you guessing
The G Shock MTG B2000XMG in a pocket.

It’s almost certain that at some point when wearing the new Casio G-Shock MTG-B2000XMG, someone will ask you what it’s made of. Such queries should come as no surprise, as at a glance, it’s quite hard to work out what material has been used to construct the multicolored, layered, and completely unique — yes, really — bezel.

Is it wood? Rock? Something else entirely? This is just part of this limited edition’s appeal, so let’s take a much closer look.
What’s it made of?
No, the bezel is not made from wood or rock. It’s actually layered, laminated carbon and glass fiber, and the finish on each one is unique. No two watches will have exactly the same flow of lines, coloration, or look. The effect isn’t only on the top side either, and it extends over the side of the bezel, helping to further the impression that it’s made of a natural material that has taken on this look over time.

This titanium, connected G-Shock is a $1,650 sci-fi-inspired design masterpiece
The G Shock GMWB5000TVA on the wrist.

My favorite non-smart watches all tell a story, or at least make me formulate one in my mind. The new Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000TVA’s fits into this perfectly due to its unique design that’s part Mobile Suit Gundam pilot cosplay and part sci-fi inspired timepiece that’d be just at home on the wrist of a character from Aliens as it is on mine.
What makes the design special?
Saying something has a sci-fi-inspired design often means it will have an overly futuristic look, a cheesy name, flashing lights, or references to a material having been used in space. In short, they’re usually pretty embarrassing. Not so with the GMW-B5000TVA. Although Casio makes some references to science fiction — the advertising puts the watch alongside a robot, for example — it’s not something pushed on the watch itself.

It’s a decision that saves the watch from becoming a cliché. The laser-engraved text on the case and bracelet, the color scheme, and the materials are all related to the watch and watchmaking, not some fictional spacecraft dreamed up by a marketing department. The clasp is one of my favorite parts of the watch, and a great example of what I mean. It has the model number of the Casio Bluetooth-equipped module used in the watch etched alongside an explanation of the Multi-Band 6 feature, and a few logos, including one for Bluetooth certification.

Slim new G Steel is the ideal introduction to the G-Shock’s unbreakable watches
casio g shock steel gst b400 hands on features price photos release date buttons

The G Steel watch range always wanted to be an everyday Casio G-Shock you could wear with casual clothing or with a suit. It just about succeeded in terms of design, but it struggled with wearability simply because it was big, thick, and pretty heavy. The newly announced GST-B400 G Steel watch is different -- due to various tech advancements Casio has made to the G-Shock line over the last few years, it’s the slimmest, lightest, and most wearable G Steel yet.

That makes it an ideal introduction to the brand, and as it also comes with a reliable and helpful Bluetooth connection too, we had to take a closer look.
How wearable?
The GST-B400 G Steel is 12.9mm thick and 80 grams, which may still sound quite a bit, but compared to the 14.1mm thick, 100-gram-plus GST-B100, 14.9mm thick GST-B200, and 15mm thick GST-B300 it makes a considerable difference when on your wrist. To further put this into perspective, the 44mm Apple Watch Series 6 is 10.7mm thick, and the 45mm Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is 11.1mm thick.
