Cingular announced today they were joining the multimedia messaging interoperability party by linking their MMS system with others through Intercarrier Multimedia Messaging Service. This will in affect allow Cingular customers equipped with MMS-enabled devices to be able to exchange pictures and short video messages, including text and audio, with similar devices from Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Leap Wireless and US Cellular.
Cingular said this is a good move for their customers as it greatly expands the number of family and friends by which multimedia style messages can be shared. This greater community represents approximately 80 percent of American wireless subscribers.
“Making it possible for wireless users to share pictures and video messages with family and friends, regardless of carrier, is an important step in the widespread adoption of multimedia messaging,” said Jim Ryan, vice president of Consumer Data Services, Cingular Wireless. “Cingular is excited to be delivering the full promise of wireless communication to our customers.”
