AT&T tries to sweeten the Fire Phone, offers buyers a Kindle Fire HDX for $50

Kindle Fire HDX back angle
AT&T has widened its deal with Amazon, progressing from selling the Fire Phone to also pushing one of the firm’s tablets. The model in question is the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch, and the network is offering you a variety of ways to purchase the device.

If you can’t wait to become fully integrated into Amazon’s mobile ecosystem, then the first deal will be exactly what you’re after. The Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch tablet costs $50 when it’s purchased alongside an Amazon Fire Phone on a two-year contract. Coincidentally, the Fire Phone’s price was recently discounted in price from an outrageous $200, to a bargain, basement price of $1. It’s absolutely not a blatant deal sweetener to try and shift the unwanted Fire Phone — no, not at all.

Alternatively, if you’d rather avoid the Fire Phone and just take the tablet, AT&T will sell it to you for $100, provided you sign a two-year airtime agreement. Finally, you can take it away for free and then pay AT&T $10 per month. There’s no contract with this option, but you will pay for any network usage separately.

Amazon’s Fire HDX tablet has a 7-inch display with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, and is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core processor. It runs Amazon’s own version of Android and comes with the Mayday helpline, plus access to all Amazon’s content — from books and films, to apps and magazines. At the time of writing, the 7-inch HDX tablet cost $180 directly through Amazon, with free shipping.

AT&T will have the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch in stock from October 24 and the deals will be available both in stores and online.

For those of you in that crowd, we're taking a look at the most common problems with the modern range of Amazon Fire tablets. We also keep tabs on common issues for the older Kindle Fire tablets since there are plenty still out there on living room coffee tables.

OnePlus 7T vs. iPhone 11: Which one will capture your next paycheck?
oneplus 7t review pocket

If you don't need a top-of-the-line premier smartphone that costs upwards of $1,000, a range of somewhat more affordable options with the features most people need is available at a more reasonable price. Current examples include last year's OnePlus 7T and the iPhone 11. But even mid-level devices pack an economic punch, and neither of these can be classified as budget phones -- not with base prices starting at $599 and $699 respectively. Let's see how they shake out in a feature-by-feature challenge.
